Not so much into the rusted through patina look, but I like the way this one sits on its wheels.
Somebody must be reproducing these old racks, no? Not enough demand?

There is an old style VW beetle around here with a roof rack like that. I figure they are original racks. I like the red wheels.

OK, I know I have no time and no money for another project, but I keep running 122 wagon ideas through my head, so if nothing else, I'll write them down here.
Add to, laugh, comment, suggest to taste.
122 (220?) Wagon / Estate / Combi
B20, warmed up with higher compression, better breathing, more cam. I think the E head is the high compression - available in the US? Target is healthy torque, not high revs.
Aluminum timing gear set.
Rebuilt twin SU's and the good breathing manifold.
Rehab cooling system.
All new rubber and hoses and sensors.
Nice flowing exhaust but not loud and droning.
123 distributer so you're not out adjusting points in the dark and the rain. (but keep the old one ready to go in the trunk!)
Optional (& expensive?) idea: D-jet intake manifold with a MegaSquirt engine management conversion. Mileage + torque + reliability?
There are a lot of conversions out there - 16V twin cam, newer overhead cam red block, the insane 5 cyl white block conversion, and the always popular LS swap! But what's wrong with durable and original, if you could get it into the 150-160hp range with torque? They only weigh 2400 lbs. My Alfa weighs 2000 lbs.
Overdrive is a must. Need to find a good one or learn to rebuild.
Lower, stiffer, but don't ruin the ride - it would be for reasonable length trips, but not 700 miles state to state trips.
15" or 16" wheels - widened steelies with hub caps, 240 turbo wheels for winter tires, American Racing Torq Thrusts.
Ipd sway bar kit.
All new stock rubber suspension bushings - no poly.
Good quality shocks.
Rebuild steering components - box, tie rods, ball joints, etc. New and tight (for an old Volvo).
Stock brakes (?) 4 wheel discs would be nice, but that leads to an 1800 axle and two different bolt patterns...?
Rebuild brake system with good hoses and master cylinder.
Interior -
RED! New vinyl interior skins and door cards are available.
123GT steering wheel, if they're out there.
Carpet would be nice, even if the rubber mats were original.
The later seat design (post-'65-ish) with the good lumbar shape. Headrest swap from a '68, or from a 140.
There was a nice accessory console I've seen. Dealer option? It contained the shifter and had a long pocket for stuff and a clock spot.
I love that grey wool / felt cargo area carpeting. You can still get it.
Paint the damn spare wheel well - they're always beat up and rusty in every picture.
Exterior -
Color?? TBD, but I like the very dark green with red. There's a nice blue as well. Ivory creamy white?? Keep to a factory color, even if not the right year.
(Note to self: Learn to paint)
Polish those bumpers!
New window seals all around - check for rust while they're out.
Small fog light set on the bumper just inside the headlights.
Side repeater lights on the flanks would be cool if they looked period.
Cibie or Hella lights.
Yellow rear turn signal lenses.
Rear roof rack, vintage style.
So, I've already blown my budget and I haven't lifted a single greasy wrench!

Do you guys have projects in your head that sit there for years? Some fade, or you change your mind, others just sit there. Some sound cool at a cars & coffee, say, but would be embarrassing to be seen driving around in.
My previous ideas, to the point of actually learning all about the car and finding the suppliers and pricing all the bits, include :
a 914/6 GT conversion with factory flares and big Fuchs wheels and a reliable stock 3-liter from an '80s SC,
a Triumph TR250, which was the TR4 with a TR6 straight 6 (but Lucas...shudder..and I already have an old sports car),
an MGB-GT V8 Sebring competition conversion, which had a Rover / Buick V8,
a Range Rover Classic but with new wiring and no Lucas and an LS V8 swap, (wait...these are British cars!)
a small bumper Volvo 242 with a Ford 302 swap,
a '65 Mustang GT350R conversion with a real 289, not a modern crate motor,
a kamm tail Alfa Romeo Spider with an Alfa Montreal V8 hidden under the hood, (but I already have an old sports car)
an Alfa Romeo 60's Giulia "Super" sedan restoration, (I had a roller once....gave it away...)
an early long hood 911 of any kind (HAH! Fat Chance!!)
wut else.....oh, a 122 wagon!
The funny thing is, when I see that list...where would I drive these things? I don't really go too many places. my city is smallish, and I ride my bike a lot. Half of them are half race cars - you don't commute or go to the hardware store in that. But you would in a Volvo 122.

Also.....I sat in a friend's well-kept 2002 yesterday. Wow, that is a nice, well-made car. Even the latches, the click of the doors. He said I can drive it sometime.
