Closer inspection and a little more aggressive approach, that PCV hose is plastic and came apart in three pieces: the bend, just before going between exhaust ports and once at the breather box. I don't see any excessive internal deposits in the hose, so I think that is good. I can also see the clamps both on the breather box and the engine block. The breather box area is very tight so I am wondering what would be appropriate to use other than oetiker clamps? Someone in a youtube vid about a topic related actually used a zip tie at the breather box. I am pretty sure I can handle this pending expertise applied to my additional Q's.

Update. Have a rubber hose on order and will have it tomorrow. This morning I discovered the extent of the problem. The plastic OEM hose basically busted in three places. I got those off but the receiving ends of the hose look like a seal did not come off nicely. I got the valve side off and cleaned up, finally go in the smallest space to get the clamp off, but the seal remains. Any ideas how to get this off being where it is? The other I gently pried under and it gave, but I do not want to hurt the breather box and cannot really pry like I did the other. So far so good without disassembly, but I am nervous.

This project is complete and did NOT resolve my issue. I am quite pleased with the effort and results having to work around very tight and close quarters, used unusual tools to get things where I needed them and learning a lot about this S60. I believe this car is one of those that experienced significant changes during its production year. Seems everything I see/read is slightly different from most S60s which for me is a challenge. So, the trouble remains. 2000 - 2500 RPM the engine lops and has no guts and the transmission does not gear up until about 3000 RPM in this case. I am lost at the moment. I may have to get rid of this thing if I cannot find a simple solution. Any other questions or things I might look at? Thanks again everyone...

Jeff

See if an auto store will read for stored engine codes via the diagnostic ODB2 port under the dash. These can be helpful in determining what is causing your issues.

The P2 generation cars are just coming into the time of pump, electronic module failure. This is a no code, erratic, failure mechanism which can manifest it self with no start, stumble, or poor running.

Diagnose by monitoring fuel pump pressure at rail during running. It needs to be rock steady at 52 psi for these cars

With a “ fuel pump pressure gauge”

You can rent from Advance auto or Pep boys, they cost about $25 new
