Presenting Everyday Carry video (YT) of my mint Volvo

Post by CIK7 »

My main point posting on the P80 forum is to inform (perhaps the largest Volvo car generation) my fellow MVSers and Volvoians :P of my car version everyday carry (EDC). This may help you with that feeling of 'I need to be better prepared', or that thought of 'I'm missing something here'. So here you are: my everyday carry of my 96 960. I can't remember if I shared the video of my walkthrough so, as a bonus, I'll include that too. Enjoy!

Have you got a condensed version, perhaps just a quick list? I honestly ran out of interest about 4 mins in due to the chaotic and ill-prepared presentation. I sincerely mean no offense, different people prefer different types of videos. I personally dont get along with the informal vlog style; though I understand others do and that it's much easier to produce! I do, however, find it interesting just what some people do carry, and am always curious to see if there's some useful item I've never considered.

I couldn't make it through the whole video either. A bit strange to me, to say the least. I've been driving for almost 50 years and have yet to feel the need to carry any pepper spray, much less carrying it in two different locations in my car. I opt for hot sauce in the little squeeze packets. At least I can use that on tacos.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

It is a pretty long video. I made a new one. I will update later. Gotta make some dinner. Also I operate on a different frequency than a lot of people, so I feel the need to carry more than one method of self defense. But you make a good secondary statement. I probably should stock up on Del Taco hot sauce. Its good, even by itself! Mmmmmmmmmm!

If you carry enough beer and Pro file tactics, you can get anything else you need on the road.

Word play (ish) for prophylactics, I assume. Which I also assume has a different or secondary meaning in the US...?

That is an extensive list. Sort of a 'bug out bag' in your car. Not at all a bad thing. I try to carry some of these things and a Universal Fixit Card for the unknowns. UFC is a credit card.

Looks like quite a lot on the face of it, but then I realised I have most of that under my boot floor... A few questions if I may:

- Why do you have so much self-defense? Multiple pepper sprays and pocket knives? Are you in an especially rough area?
- 3 dashcams, is that front, rear, and driver? What is your reasoning behind the third, if my assumption is correct? Dashcams are still rather uncommon in the UK and have a lot of bad press.
- 3 medkits/belt cutters. Why three? Or are they all in different places? Even still, what's the justification - have you previously been in an incident where just a single one in one location had a negative outcome?
- 2 spare phones, if you have charging cables why do you need the extra phones? Seems like something one would forget to charge and end up being useless anyway.
- Chains - are they snow chains or tow chains or yet another self-defense item?
- 2 additional jacks - why? I've never used more than one jack to do any job in my life, yet you have three (including the spare scissor jack). Do you often find yourself doing major maintenance or repairs on your daily commute?

Here's my own personal list (feel free to critique!):

Under my boot floor I store the following: Jumper cables, extending wheel brace, tow rope, spare rope (for securing load items), compact 3/8ths socket and screwdriver set (Bahco S330), bulb kit, hi-vis vest, emergency triangle and tyre inflator. In winter I'll add a spare coat and gloves.

I also have an atlas, a first aid kit, and insurance details in the rear seat pockets. I store a microfibre cloth and quick detailer under the arm rest (to deal with bird bombs and any interior messes), and keep a tyre pressure gauge, torch, multi-tool, babywipes and charging cable in the glovebox. The glovebox also houses two CD wallets...!

Ultimately I think that leaves me covered in most events, and the items I have are all compact enough that everything is hidden from view with no impact on load space or useable cabin space.

Gosh, rereading that I have a LOT more stuff than I expected.
