2000 Volvo V70XC strut issue

Post by Richard99 »

Hello,

I've attached a picture of the strut that is out of whack on the driver's side, and the one that appears normal which is on the passenger side. Anyone know what may be wrong with it? Hoping for an answer before I dive in there. The cap doesn't turn when I try to turn it by hand.

Thanks,

Eric

Broken strut mount. Not uncommon. Grab and hold the fender, keep your eyes on the Strut. Bounce the car up and down.

The Strut mount can be replaced on the Strut. If you don't know what your doing it is best to take the Strut and new Strut mount to a repair shop and have them install the new Strut mount on the strut. If you lose control of the spring on the Strut it can do some serious damage even kill you.

Rick, the picture is the strut bearing plate and not the mount. The mount is a rubber part.

What you are seeing with the picture Richard99 is the center bush in the top mount has separated from the mount. Like Rick says this is a common issue with Volvos of this era.

Volvo replaced the regular part with the one from the XC90 as it was much stronger and tells to fails less often.

Try to use brands like Sachs or OE or Lemforder

Take Rick's warning on replacing this part on the strut seriously. Compressed springs can cause a lot of damage if they break loose!!

Click on the picture it is linked to the listing at FCP Euro.
It is call the Strut mount because it mounts the upper end of the Strut to the the body.

I have never seen a bearing plate/mount break. I'm sure anything can happen. It is the rubber spring mount that fails as per my link to FCP web-site.

I have a safety related question.
Is there a fuse at the battery end of that large red wire?
Sooner or later, the threads it's rubbing against will short it
to ground, and after the fire, struts will no longer be an issue.
Just sayin'...

Perhaps in the form of improved cable routing.

Thanks. I will place a fuse in-line. I'll also find a way to reroute the wire.

There are a couple of pass throughs in
the firewall near the steering column.

+1 on the XC90 spring seats.
And spend the money on OEM,
not the cheap stuff. The less
expensive seats do not last.
