1998 Volvo S70 T5 - Cruise Control Brake Switch

Post by Gerd »

Hi all. After reading a number of times that the 1998 doesn't have a brake cruise control switch and checking everything else to get my cruise working, I was driving down the road and decided to pull up brake pedal and check cc. It worked. Maybe mine is a late in the year production or something.

Anyway, I pulled the plunger out with the brake depressed and went for a drive and engaged cc and all good. Until I used the brake. Then it quit working. Have done same thing a few times and it won't lock in place.

Do I need a new switch or is there a fix to lock plunger in place?

Thanks

I thought I had it by adding some washers to brake pedal arm to depress the switch. And it worked. Once. Again, as soon as I hit the brake, it wouldn't engage anymore.

Thoughts...?

It occurs to me that maybe the issue is the 'ratcheting' the plunger is making as once it is pushed back in, it just stays. Is it supposed to work that way?

Reach up and push the switch back into it's bracket. Over time they slip out of place.

Okay. I’ll give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks.
I did sort of get it working with washers taped to brake pedal arm, I have to pull it up about a millimetre to get it working. So was going to add a thin washer tomorrow anyway.
But will try your suggestion for sure.

I see what you mean but I can't see where the switch should lock into the bracket. If I push it fwd, as soon as I release the brake pedal, it slides backwards to the point the cruise won't come on. I think I just need to find a good image ofit or technical drawing of where it locks in as I am a little too big to be twisted up under there for very long.

That is what kids are for.

I'm pretty sure it just pushes into a hole and clips in place. Most likely the clips broke off.

That being a a 1998 ... I think it is a pneumatic valve rather then a electrical switch.

Pull the part out and take a look. Get the part number off of it.

Should be Volvo part number 9146505.

Yup. Saw this on FCP a few days ago. I think you are right about clips as it moves fwd and back fairly easy. The plunger has a ratchet inside of it but the problem seems to be the housing not locking in place. Anyway, I just need to free up 5-10 min to takes some pics under there and assess what the fix is.
I'll let you know.

Cheers
