Hard Brake Pedal XC90 2007

Post by Beck2020 »

Hi All I am experiencing the Hard pedal problem on my XC90 2007. It looks like it could be several issues. The dealer wants to replace the Master Cylinder Brake Booster for $1,200.

He also mentioned that the Vacuum pump leaks oil could this be the problem ?

You didn't mention which engine you have

If you have the 3.2 then continue reading.

If not then you can ignore the rest of this post

The 3.2 uses the Vacuum pump to create the brake boost assist.

If you disconnect the line coming out of the Vacuum pump you will get no brake assist.

The pump has a check valve on the side of it that should be replaced (it comes with the re-build kit)

If it were me I would rebuild the Vacuum pump first.

Here is what I bought for my 2010 S80 3.2

$62.53 --- (31401556) --- Volvo Brake Vacuum Pump Repair Kit

Note: I did use the actual Volvo kit

This same kit will work for you 2007 XC90 3.2

Hi thanks for your reply it was very helpful. My engine is the 3.2, I recently purchased the car and after driving a few miles last week the brake pedal became hard. The garage this week said the vacuum pump was leaking oil but that had nothing to do with my brakes. I needed a new power booster and the cost installed was a whopping $1,200.

Beck,

Here is what it looks on my S80 3.2 after the rebuild

Image

The pump creates a Vacuum in the hose that connects the pump to the booster

If the check valve is broken then the booster wont work right

If the seals in the booster are broken then it won't hold a vacuum and it wont provide the brake assist

If the hose is broken then it won't hold a vacuum

If the O-ring for the hose is broken then it won't hold a vacuum

Orange O-ring

Good luck

Paul
