98 V70 Echoing Clunk in rear

Post by yanga001 »

Hi everyone,

Ill try to put up a recording tomorrow, but recently i have been hearing an echoing clunk in the rear on the drivers side. The car drives in a straight line, but if i go over a speed bump, i hear a clunk (like metal striking metal) that seems to echo through the car. Normal driving will not cause it to clunk, and i took a quick look under the car and found the following. The springs seem to be fine, shock absorbers look good, no excessive rust on any of the suspension components. It does not sound like the delta link bushing found in other videos, but i will need to look at it closely.

Im hoping its something small as i just dropped 200 for a weld in flex pipe and exhaust manifold gaskets + labour.

Hy,

I would check these parts circled round. I had recently something that sounds strangely like your issue. You say "no excessive rust...".

On my 1999(s) there is a cup on the lower spring seat that gets loose and rattles. I don’t see it on this diagram, so maybe you don’t have it on a 1998?

Details here.

Editorial comment. The P80 rear suspension has to be one of the most robust in the business. I know the delta link job is tough, but how many makes run 200k\25 years miles with no parts replacements ?

Do you mean number 10 in Manov's image, sitting beneath the upper spring seat in the top left circle? The item pictured here? Nivomat (L) and standard (R)? If so, I have also had clunks from these loosening.

That’s the part!

The diagram is confusing because part 10 actually sits below the spring, down in the lower spring seat, with a small index pin to stop it from rotating. A single hex bolt holds it in, and can get loose.

Checked both delta links and they seem fine, i added some pictures to illustrate the lack of "excessive rust"
