Blower Motor Whine - 2006 s60

Post by moncureww »

The climate control on my 2006 s60 2.5T AWD is acting slightly strange - I'm thinking it's indicative of the need for a blower motor and resistor replacement, but I'd like to hear others' thoughts based on the symptoms:

(1) AC works fine, no noises, no issues - blows hard. Maybe a barely audible whine (almost imperceptible) at high speed.
(2) when I turn it to 50% fan at 100% heat or so, there is no sound and the heat continues to blows fine.
(3) When I turn the heat on full blast, it starts to whir a very high-pitched yet still pretty quiet sound - a very slight intermittent whine, and it seems to blow with varying intensity.
(4) when I turn it to 50% fan at 100% heat, or so there is no sound and the heat blows fine.

Basically it is pretty imperceptible at anything except the higher speeds... I'm thinking I may just order the blower motor and blower motor resistor and do a pre-emptive DIY replacement. In my experience when they start to make noise, you have some time before they go, but if you're driving the car and it's getting cold out, that time can go really fast!

Has anyone else experienced these same symptoms? If so, how long did it last after the noises before it went?

I've done a blower motor and resistor on a 240, and this seems like a walk in the park compared to that work! Question though - will I need the blower motor removal tool?

Update - the whine went away, and I started toggling through all the vents to more closely see what's going on. The whine is so faint - reminds me of the sound my 850 made for about the last two years of its life.

More importantly, here is what is happening with the CC - and I'm beginning to think it's the heater flap or whatever you call it.

(1) in the defrost seleciton, it is 100% heat with no issues, and the fan blows perfectly.
(2) when I direct the vents to the FLOOR, there are no issues and it blows strong.
(3) When I use the AUTO selection, or choose the regular vents blowing at me, it blows HOT then no heat then Hot, then no heat, and toggles back and forth as I blow at 100%.
(4) When I run the heat at half hot, half the flow, it runs just fine.

This leads me to think it's the heater blend door causing the issues at some point that keeps toggling back and forth, and then on top of it a blower motor that needs lubrication or replaced.

Is there more than just one blend door as well?

I forgot where I wrote the DIY in the XC90 forum, but:
- Torx screws, search but some people can save the 5th screw w/o issues.
Others break the 5th tab, also OK.
- Oil the shaft...I wrote a detailed DIY in 2017, so far so good...

Here it is:

cn90 - I saw your writeup and i plan on doing just that.

my concern is more of the something causing the fan to blow hot, go low, then slow down, at this point. it appears to be something else in there causing that.

It is exactly lack of lubrication.

Remember this is from bushing going dry. There is no bearing on the shaft, just bushing.
It is a very easy DIY with no cost to you.
Maybe you should do it and give us feedback in a few weeks whether it works or not.
