Is it possible to remove rear subframe on 2000 Volvo V70xc without a lift?

Post by Richard99 »

Hi,

Wondering if anyone has removed the rear subframe on a 98-00 Volvo V70xc without a fancy shop lift? Not sure if there is enough clearance created from normal jack stands to get it out of there.

Short version, once you get the main bolts out it is quite easy to drop, but it is common that the bolts get seized in the Aluminum subframe in wet climates

I see. My main concern is whether I'll have enough clearance to slide it out from under the car, and the difficulty of bolting it back up to the car - lining everything up right.

I did it with a pair of long axle stands I own. I placed them near the rocker panel pinch weld on a piece of wood between it and the floor to spread the load.

I used a floor jack under the rear diff plate to pull the whole frame out. I placed a piece of wood on the floor jack to spread the load and make it a little more steady on the jack.

I need to see if I can find my 'R' sub-frame thread.

This is the thread I'm was talking about. On page 6 of the thread there is a picture of the rear subframe mounting area and on the RHS of the picture you can see the axle stand the car is sitting on.

Hi Neil. I see where you start to mention the issue of disconnecting the hard brake lines without letting all the fluid out. How did you accomplish this? Also, for the parking brake cables did you just cut those and replace them later with new ones?

Thanks,

Eric
