That unit should work fine. You can get a new one on eBay for about $75. Do a search for Innova 3100 or Equus 3100. Try to get a 3100a; it is upgreadable through the Internet and is the newest model of the 3100. If you do get a 3100a be sure it includes the software CD and the computer connection cable or you will not be able to upgrade it. Some of the sellers will try to sell a unit with out those parts. I believe the 3100 is the oldest and cheapest, followed by the slightly newer 3100c.
Also, look at the Innova web site at:

You'll never regret getting an OBD2 code reader.
OBD2 Code reader suitability, 1998 V70
Thank you all. I think that my main question - regarding the L-line - has been sufficiently clarified for me to go out shopping. To those who mentioned it: I'm much less concerned than many (it seems) by the Service Reminder light. That one goes out by itself in a few km. anyway, so having it come on is simply a bulb check for me, until I decide that it's oil change etc. time.
Thanks again.

Thanks to all who responded to my queries. I finally bit the bullet and found an OBD reader on ebay ($20.00 + shipping - how can you lose) and ordered it up. Aside from having a pretty mean grip on the OBD plug, the unit powered up all right and read the system as clear. Next day I took the vehicle in for its AirCare inspection prior to renewing licence and insurance (British Columbia, y'know) and the vehicle passed with flying colo(u)rs; however, the inspection report listed several "monitors not set: Catalyst, Evaporative, Secondary Air"...and on and on.
For those of you in the know, would these 'monitors not set' be a function of the driving pattern required before an inspection of this nature, which I've heard and read about in this forum, or perhaps sensors which aren't working, or not passed on to the reader at the facility? Not a big issue, as we passed the inspection, but I'd like to know anyway. Haven't had the opportunity to run it past my advisors locally, but I'll get to that eventually, I guess.
As for the code reader itself, I'll test it further with the dreaded "Gas Cap Open" warning, and ensure that it really can read codes, and cancel the Check Engine light, and then relax until the next event.
Well, no response to the "Gas Cap Test", so I'm still not certain as to the effectiveness of this tester, so will have to wait for another Check engine event. If anyone has had experience with the gas cap problem, I'd be happy to hear from you.

Any "not ready" codes mean you need to keep driving...they will eventually be ready as long as no other codes are set. That said, the so-called "gas cap" code you have could be any number of leaks in places in the gas evap. line. The main cause is the gas cap but it could also be the evap solenoid located on the front upper portion of the fan shroud at the front of the car (it has one line running in and another running out), or it could be the charcoal cannister under your driver's tire area. I would check all of the small hoses running to and from the solenoid mentioned first.
I know you don't care about the service light but since there was some erroneous information in this thread, I feel I should clarify. Btw, that light is a good gauge for boosting. In other words, in your case, wait until the light goes off to give your car a good boost (if you have turbo). The car really should be warmed up before you do this and when the light goes off you should be sufficiently warmed up.
Happy Volvoing and I hope you get your readiness codes go off.

No it doesn't...not on a '98. It takes a special tool. I have a DRAPER. Pushing buttons doesn't work, although it does on '99 and later S/V/XC/C 70's. Ask me how I know. Check here: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/reset.phplewismug wrote: The service light can be reset by following the directions I found on VolvoForums.com. You do not need a tool to do this.:
"Turn the key to position 1 push and hold the trip reset button while holding turn key to position 2 and watch for the service light to flash 3 times then release the trip reset button and it should be reset. To make sure turn key off then start the car and make sure the light is off."
I have reset the service light on my 99 S70 using this method plenty of times. It should work with your car.
