Light warning ⚠ issue

Post by ashleyg82v702001 »

Hi all, do all the lights report through the rear module?

My 2002 is suffering from a bulb failure warning that seems to originate from the side lights ..
Car says possition light failure, then check brake bulb and if rear fog is turned on multiple bulb failure.

If I turn off possition 2 and running lights are off I get no warning for lights until I switch side lights on then message appears... Its passed MOT no problems it's just really annoying me 😂

Can anyone help?

I've put new bulbs all round, I do not have mirror pos. lights and all bulbs are working.

The car will report a bulb issue if it tries to turn on a bulb and does not see the expected power level into the bulb circuit. This is usually caused by a burned out bulb, or less often a bad wire. In some cases the bulb is ok but it is making poor contact with its socket.

A failure with the brake lights will not be displayed until you turn them on with the brake pedal, and the same is true for the fog lights and turn indicators.
  • Did these warnings appear after bulb replacement?
LED bulbs
  • You report all bulbs working, but did you replace the bulbs with the original type or with LED (Light Emitting Diode) replacements?
LEDs use less power and so may show as bulb failures, as the car was not designed to test them. The bulbs light as desired, but the car shows a warning.

You can live with the warning but it will hide future bulb failures.
You may be able to get LED adapters that add resistance to existing LED bulbs so that the detection works correctly.
You can get new LED bulbs that are suitable for bulb failure detection circuits.

These are all standard oem quality filament bulbs, as I said all bulbs are new as I thought maybe some had poor filaments (blown and re-welded themselves) when I replaced them I cleaned all the terminals with emery cloth and spray contact cleaner... All the faults seem to be relaying to rear light clusters.. With brake, rear fog and pos. Lamp.
Front foglamp does not generate a multiple bulb failure warning

I have since discovered that numberplate lights flickered on closing the hatch, it has broken wires in the hinge. Repaired these but message is still there 😕.

If it had just been brake warning and position light warning I'd say it was hatch wiring needs replacing but the foglamp don't go through the tailgate hinge.. Any thoughts on that?

Having a multiple bulb failure I suspect it may be something like a resistive ground that's common to the different lights with warnings. Do you notice a difference in brightness between the left and right side for the bulb on both sides, such as the rear fog lights? Do the turn indicators lights cause a warning? If so does it occur with both right and left sides, or not? There are ground junction points with multiple wires but it looks like there's different ground junctions between the left and right sides and why I'm asking if there's any difference in brightness between the sides.

There doesn't seem to be any difference between the left or right side, I'm hoping to purchase vida in the new year (finances permitting need the whole setup incl. a laptop)
Maybe it will point me in the correct direction 🤷‍♂️
.
I can't find any earthing points at the rear of the car can anyone point me in that general direction for them?
I have removed, emeried and refixed all 6 in the engine bay (3 on either wing) and various others around the engine.
That made no difference.

Attached is where the ground junction points are for the rear lights, looks to be in front of the rear tires. I'm not certain what needs to be removed to get these ground points. If you don't mind what are all the lights with bulb out warnings? I'll look for what's common to these lights and what's not, it may help and since there's multiple bulb out warnings I have to think it's a common power or ground connection to all that give the warnings.

Awesome thankyou!...

The error is position lamp failure, upon braking it becomes check brake light, then if rear fog is activated it becomes multiple bulb failure.

Front fog lamps or headlight don't give a message hence my looking towards rear light issue.

If I live data monitor on my icarsoft it tells me bank 1 possition light (I think), High level brake light and rear fog

One thing you might do is check fuses 1 and 2 in the rear compartment. These are the power fuses to the REM. Make sure both are good and contacts are clean. These fuses are both 10A and if you're only able to do a visual inspection (vs a measuring with a meter) swap the positions of the fuses when you reinstall them to see if any difference in the bulb out conditions. For the position lights this includes the front, side, rear and license plate bulbs. There are two bulbs I believe for the license plate and 2 position bulbs in each tail light, are all these lights working? I've read some people can miss one of the two lights out in the rear tail lights and make sure both license plate bulbs are working.
