seat swap

Post by azureblue »

I have checked and it seems that I can put 2003 S80 seats in my 2001 V70.
Can someone verify? Any caveats on installation?

I don't know about the software part for the SRS, these being different car models. But the frames should be identical. Double check the rails attach to the floor the same way. Careful with the electrical connectors, bit tricky to open (see Youtube) and also very careful about the seatbelt bolt - it's a small bolt with few threads so don't over-tighten it, otherwise the threads start to shear. It has red loctite so it's safe, it won't unscrew. The belt metal bracket at this bolt stays at a very specific position, there is a metal bump and a corresponding metal hole to align the belt metal plate at the correct angle (important safety measure). Look carefully before removing the bolt. Access the bolt after lifting the seat a little. The seats are really heavy, two people is quite needed. No need to remove the headrests, just go behind the seat, there's two small levers on each side, lift and the seat will flip flat - it's the easiest way to remove it from the car. Have the battery disconnected 5 minutes before undoing the seat connectors.

You want to move Power Seat Module from old seat to new seat. Without CEM recognizing PSM, you will not have power seat functions. Seats with side airbag requires the seat rail be grounded to discharge any static before you lift the seat off the floor mount.

Remove the negative terminal on battery before starting to undo the bolts.

This may help a little https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forum ... =9&t=89361

you need to transfer all electronics to new seat, I would also consider removing your old airbag from the seat and putting in new seat, thats assuming the seat frame is the same, knowing volvo they probably are. In my opinion the actual airbag is more of a worry than whether you disconnected the battery or not, there are warning stickers on the airbags not to swap between cars, most people ignore this because its hidden in the seat.

Again dont worry about disconnecting battery too much, i unplug my seats numerous times with touching the battery (usually forget) just if you run the car you will get an srs code.

Before swapping things around check out part numbers - specifically the airbag part numbers.

When I did a seat swap years ago on an S60 - (it was S60 leathertte to leather) - all I did was move all the modules over. Everything plugged in without issue. Ultimately I gave the car to my sister and my nephew totalled it - all the airbags worked fine. I am not saying it will work - that is your choice, but in my instance I had zero codes, the computer accepted everything and ultimately everything worked.

thanks for the tips on the PSM and the air bag. I had a feeling there was more to it than just wrenching..

Tried to swap seats rails from 2003 S80 to 2004 S60. It is almost a drop in fit. The front mounting holes are slightly off by approximately the radius of the hole.

i swapped a power drivers seat rail to my standard passenger side, the rail was exactly 3-4mm longer. i used a large building washer and it was perfect. didnt bother with a longer bolt, bolt is plenty long enough.

Same experience, swapped passenger manual leather 2003 S60 to electric leather 2003 S60, no codes, all electrics working fine. Fun fact, removing the electric seat from the junkyard had its story as the seat was in the forward position covering the two front rail bolts. Had a car battery with me, but no way to power up at the front connector - not to mention one may accidentally power the seat airbag wires. I had to remove the side control switches, got to the electronic board, and power directly at the moving back switch.
