More statistics on US states and COVID-19 growth rates. My raw information is from Worldometer. Any errors or misrepresentations are my own.

These tables show all available US states and territories and the COVID-19 data for the last 5 days. I have sorted the states alphabetically and added growth rates for last several days for all states with ranking of each day. Of course, this information changes daily. I have presented the table in two parts because of the screen shot, but it is actually one table in Excel.

Again, results change daily.

For your information, the top 5 states or territories yesterday in growth rate (the worst containment) are: Tennessee (0.144) with 247,587 cases, North Dakota (0.134) with 37,719 cases, Minnesota (0.129) with 133,802 cases, Louisiana (0.125) with 179,842 cases, and Vermont (0.117) with 2073 cases. All states have reopened to various levels. Many states have now paused or reversed opening actions. Tennessee has been in top 5 list for 12 of last 31 days. North Dakota has been in top 5 list for 78 of last 116 days. Minnesota has been in top 5 list for 58 of last 81 days. Louisiana has been in top 5 list for 6 of last 15 days.

You have likely seen the headlines that new Covid-19 cases are growing rapidly and reaching record numbers. But, what states are they growing the most and how fast? I have looked deeper into my records from Worldometer to find some answers.

I looked at state growth rate 5 day moving averages for October. Comparisons were made of the five day moving average on each Saturday to the five day moving average of October 3. The calculation was new week five day moving average divided by October 3 five day moving average.

I color coded the results. If the weeks change was not over 1.0, the cell was not colored. If the weeks change was 1.0 to 1.25, the cell was colored green. If the weeks change was 1.25 to 1.5, the cell was colored yellow. If the weeks change was 1.5 to 2, the cell was colored orange. If the weeks change was over 2, the cell was colored red.

The fastest growing states (over 2.0) are: US Virgin Islands, Florida, Colorado, Rhode Island, Arizona, Illinois. Most of these states have not been appearing in the daily top 5 lists.

The next group (increased 1.5 to 2.0) are: West Virginia, Georgia, District of Columbia, Michigan, New Mexico, Kansas, Iowa, Maine, Nevada, and Alaska.

States with noted improvement during October are: Hawaii, Guam, Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin.

Honorable mention goes to states that have shown progress: South Dakota, Vermont, Nebraska, Montana, and Arkansas.
