1999 S70-GLT Radiator Replacement Need Advice

1999 S70-GLT Radiator Replacement Need Advice

Hi Everyone

The 1999 GLT uses the electronic throttle control module. The air intake pipe is hard plastic connected to the bottom of the ETM. This pipe extends to the left under the manifold and take a sharp 90 turn towards the radiator fan where is connects to the inter-cooler hose. This pipe blocks the removal of the fan and shroud that is typically removed to allow the radiator to slip out and down. The upper connector from the inter-cooler also is an obstacle to removing the radiator. Roberts DIY on Youtube shows the job on a pre 1999 car where the job is somewhat easier.

Anybody have experience doing this job on a 1999. I have previously done it on a 1998 T5 turbo, no problems.
I have thought of removing the intake manifold. This would allow the fan housing to be removed and the rest of the job to proceed. Of course I would need a new manifold gasket that I don't have on hand.

Also the bolts on the bottom of the radiator are thoroughly rusted and will need to be cut/broken off and all the hardware replace. Just a little more of a challenge. :)

You can drop the AV condensor , intercooler, and radiator as a one piece “ sand which” then take the sandwich apart under The car. That’s what I did on my 99 back in 2013

The m8 bolts on the radiator ears will be nasty and break. Lots of pb blaster soak here, like a week replace with SS hardware

Replace the fan screws with SSlag screws too.

If PCV system refresh is due, pull the intake manifold and throttle body and that will make the radiator easier.

No need to evacuate or discharge the AC system

Don’t put the intercooler in upside down people on this forum will laugh at you

Thanks for the tip. I was lucky this time and with PB blaster soaking for 2 days I removed the nuts from the radiator ears. The bolts are till mounted. The bottom bolts that create the sandwich are totally frozen. They will have to be cut and replaced.

There are M6 bolts that thread into crappy steel speed nuts. I replaced those with SS M6 bolts and nuts. I had to cut a 3/4 access hold to put those in.

Just wanted to give an update on the radiator removal. I did drop the intercooler, radiator and fan out the bottom. When I tried to lift them up i could not clear the lower AC hose attached to the sub frame.

I finally looked carefully at the hard plastic induction air pipe that was the original obstacle (picture shows it coming away from the ETM). Fortunately the 7mm screw head on the pipe clamp is visible and accessible.
With the radiator, etc. already out of the way I used a 1/4 in drive socket and a short extension to loosened the clamp screw and popped the pipe off of the ETM. This finally created the space needed to fit the intercooler, radiator and fan shroud back into position. When reassembling the induction pipe I positioned the clamp screw at the 12 o'clock position, behind the ETM. This allows a socket and extension to reach the clamp running parallel to the block. It is easier to access when all the components are back in place.

Please be very careful to notice the position of the clamp removing and replacing the upper induction tube hose clamp. It only fits one way that allow the small upper radiator relay support's cutout to properly fit over the clamp and the hose.

Hope this helps other owners fitted with the ETM and hard plastic induction pipe.

Top picture is at the 12 o'clock position, post installation looking from the driver's side along side the head. Lower picture is the original 3 o'clock position all relative to looking down from the top of the engine and referencing the ETM connection to the induction pipe.
