Seafoam works.
Seafoam works.
Had oil on top of engine and oil blowing out dipstick tube. Changed flame trap, replaced vacuum hose to trap and removed and cleaned vacuum tree. Still had oil coming out of dipstick tube. Did not have time or funds to replace oil separator. Poured about 1/4 can of seafoam down one of the tubes going to oil separator, drove for a week and changed oil. 2 weeks later dipstick tube is still clean and dry.

what is oil separator?
any side effects?
any side effects?
Take a look at this diagram to see separator and all connecting parts.
http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850oiltrap.htm
As you can see the cost of doing this job the conventional way is over $170 with shipping, and a days work. You must remove intake manifold to get to trap.
The only side effect was slight odor of Seafoam in my garage for a week.

oh, ok... you are talking about the oil trap. Just changed mine. Was a wee bit of a job. It was really really gunked up with oil including large solid burnt looking chunks at 145000 miles.
The same type of gunk you saw in the trap is also in your engine. A can of Seafoam in the crankcase for a couple of weeks will dissolve much of it, then you drain it out as extra dirty oil. It also cleans up the valve lifters and the engine will run much quieter. If you can't find Seafoam try Siloo brand "HYDRA-VALVE KLEEN" available at NAPA stores. It's cheaper but the can is much smaller.

I put a full can of Seafoam in my gas tank when I had about 14 gallons in the tank. I drove it for about 30 minutes and thought I felt a noticeable difference. I let it sit overnight and drove it to Stillwater the next day. I could REALLY tell a difference when I left in the morning and even more so when I drove home (75 miles). I am thoroughly impressed with the added (restored) power and gas mileage. I averaged 31.2 mpg today. Definitely a new record for me. I was driving 65 with some stop and go. I would recommend this product for anyone. If you are worried about it, just do it the easy way by putting it in the gas tank.
I think that I am going to use seafoam in my oil and pour some down into my oil separator next.
now 117000 miles on my 850, runs better every day

I just did the SeaFoam treatment with 2 cars last weekend and I'm convinced.
I'll make this the official "Pinned" Sea Foam Thread after getting some more results, if that's ok with everyone.
Everyone post your results, good and bad.
Btw, this is the other recent SeaFoam thread on here:

a more detailed explanation will appear in my blog (I just began on this site) within a 1/2 day or so... but the car I just got doesn't need t-belts, but needs a dipstick (well a new one other than me - BTW I have NEVER seen/heard of a dipstick blowing clear out... I mean it's gone!)-- I blew it out on a spirited burst on the way back to my parents house after getting it today... whoops, well I don't have the PCV parts and hafta drive it 1200 miles in 3 days from now ... I do have a can of sea foam - it goes into the oil trap tube tomorrow morning....

If you blew out the dipstick as you say, you're in serious danger of blowing out the rear main seal in the engine, so I hope you get it sorted out quickly.
Good luck!
I actually have two unused cans of seafoam in my garage. I may try this in the crankcase just to see what happens. I'm about at the point where I'm due for an oil change anyway.

Exactly which tube did you pour the Seafoam into? I replaced my oil separator last year and none of my symptoms went away. I'm thinking that there was a bunch of build-up where the oil separator connects to the engine and I didn't clean it out. Never thought of trying this!waynej wrote:Poured about 1/4 can of seafoam down one of the tubes going to oil separator, drove for a week and changed oil. 2 weeks later dipstick tube is still clean and dry.
