Seafoam, interesting stuff

Post by JRL »

I have a car for sale (98 V70 T5 5 speed) in the classifieds.
It needs a few things (hence the cheap price) but I wanted to make sure the motor was OK. We took a compression and leakdown... eh, not so hot.
So, we did a full Seafoam treatment yesterday, now, not only is the engine near perfect, it's smoother and runs like a new car.
(Compression went from:
150-140-155-50-30 to:
165-170-159-165-168!!! (which is excellent)
I cannot recommend this stuff more than I am right now as long as it's applied properly

My wife used to work at an auto parts store and I can remember when she brought the first bottle of Seafoam home for me to try. I have used it exclusively ever since. I'm right there with ya on this stuff. It's great!

I have actually never used it, but I'm guessing it loosened sticky or carboned rings. I have taken engines apart and many times the rings get carboned into the piston grooves and don't expand against the cylinder walls as tightly as they should and maybe the seafoam loosens the rings in their grooves. I have heard that marvel mystery oil also helps this condition.

JRL, did you draft it through a vaccuum line or did you add it to the crankcase for your results?

Never heard of Seafoam personally but from a youtube vid it appears to be very similar to Redex .

Used to love annoying the old dear next door by pouring it down the carb of my Mini when she had her sheets out to dry lol .

Makes me wonder if its possible to feed redex through the same way on an injection engine . With the Mini it was air filter off and pour it straight into the carb throat .

I'm in Australia and for some time now I've been studying the comments posted by various people who have used Seafoam and I've been very impressed with the quite remarkable results they have achieved using this product and, consequently, I would like to expose my 850 T5 to the Seafoam experience.

But there is one big problem I can't overcome.

I live in Australia and, unfortunately, Seafoam is not available here. I've even contacted Seafoam in America to establish if they intend marketing their product in Australia in the near future but the bottom line answer is no!

The only way for me to obtain some Seafoam is for a member of this Volvo Forum living in the States to purchase it on my behalf and send it over to me.

Is any member in the States willing to do this?

If any one is prepared to help, then please let me know the total cost (product + postage) and I will immediately forward that amount to you before you undertake to purchase the Seafoam for me.

Any help would be much appreciated.
There are only two types of car owners - those who own Volvos and those who wish they did.

Not sure if they will allow air freight on this because it's combustible. Will shipping (literally) work for you? I know it would take a long time to get to you. Let me do some checking. I have to go to the post office tomorrow. If it is allowed, then maybe we can work something out.
