There is a 2009 S40 2.4i near me for sale with 80k miles, good condition, they're asking $5200. Seems like a good deal?
This would be a DD and for road trips..Don't care really about sportiness.
What are the common issues to look for? I see motor mounts is one. PCV? Common transmission issues?
I currently have an 1998 S70 so I'm very familiar with it's issues. Not sure if any of the same issues leaked into the S40.
Thanks!
Looking at 2009 S40... common problems?

The back seating is okay for small children and small adults. May not have enough leg room for front facing children car seats or boosters. Similar enough to my son's 2008 C30 T5 M66 in terms of body styling up front. Struts, shocks, complete front and rear brakes, rear adjustable camber arm, tires and alignment were needed besides rear sway bar bushings and end links. We are the 4th owner so driver's seat has some peeling. Clutch is weak but should be enough to get my son through college.
Overall nice driving and riding car. It's a 2 seater in the back with more leg room than the S40, almost bought a V50. The S40 should be a fun car to drive, enjoy.

Owned this car for 48 hours and it has the following issues:
-Cracked exhaust manifold (this is the PZEV version of the engine and the manifold is discontinued and not available anywhere)
-Both inner CV boots are torn and grease is slung everywhere, vibration when accelerating above ~50mph
-2-3 oil leaks, looks like one from the trans and a couple from the engine
-manual shifting doesn't work, stays in drive when I move the shifter over to manual mode
-low beams are shit, I put in H9 bulbs which helped, and then bought used OEM xenons to swap in later
Minor annoying things:
-Driver seat is power but there are no memory buttons...
-No trunk button inside the car, um what?
-Radio bluetooth cannot play music
-Previous owner put in the cheapest tires available, they are super loud
Other than these things I like the car so far, just needs some TLC and upgrades.

I don't recall ever having a Volvo with a trunk release button inside the car.? The release button is above the license plate. My S80 does have a valet lockout button on the dash. My service advisor says the S40 has a weak overhead light assembly which is discontinued. So be gentle with it. Maybe check with Erie VoVo for a used manifold. June

My S70 has a trunk release button next to the gas door button on the driver side door panel.
Thanks for pointing me to Erie VoVo, looks like a solid place to get used parts, especially for this PZEV engine.

I just bought an '09 S40 2.4i for my daughter's first car with 104k. Was told that it spun a bearing, so I only paid $300 for it. I found a short block w/ 75k miles and put in new bearings and rings and had the head redone. I could see that previous owners never took care of the PCV box, so that was replaced along with all the fun stuff like tb, wp, starter, belts and hoses. When reassembling I did notice the lack of coolant level sensor, so I plan to pay attention to that.
Like yours, my cv boots were torn so replacement axles went in as well. I'm trying to determine the expected life on lower control arm bushings. I think it may make sense to replace while everything is all apart. Otherwise it looks like a good car, I haven't driven it yet, but I has got me looking at C30s as my youngest son drops hints about wanting my p80 V70 when he gets his license.
