1999 s80 t6 preventive maintenance/common problems to watch for

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

1999 s80 t6 preventive maintenance/common problems to watch for

Post by rdl1996 »

Just bought a a 1999 s80 t6 on a bit of a whim. After a little bit of research it seems this year and model seemed to have a lot of transmission problems. The car seems to shift fine but I want to know if there is any way to check for any problems with it. Also any preventive maintenance tips would be appreciated. Should note that it has around 93,000 miles on it.

It is the XC90 T6 AWD apparently that have the high failure rate transmission wise. Change the engine oil often!! Your car has two turbo chargers which puts the oil to the test. Really the same trouble as any other P2 car suspension or body wise and like all 99 Volvo cars etm problems potentially.

Both my 2002 S80 T6 and my current 2004 S80 T6 need premium fuel to boost property it is a noticeable difference mileage and power wise. You have in my opinion the finest highway cruiser Volvo ever built and low mileage at that! So enjoy your new car! June

Oh also the last car design before Ford bought them. Imho the last Volvo super quality interior design until Geely bankrolled the 2016 XC90 and beyond.
My Volvo cars owned

1998 S90 ordered totalled after 3 weeks
1998 V70 GT dealer stock car
2002 S80 T6 ordered totalled
2004 S80 T6 dealer stock car and current car owned

One piece of advice, if you decide to change the transmission fluid, buy the genuine Volvo fluid. My 2004 went till 2016 and 117K with the factory fill which was still perfectly clean to Walmart Supertec Dextron III which caused harsh shifts. Then the dealer flushed it with BG synthetic which caused slushy shifts, and finally I requested genuine Volvo fluid be used and shifts went back to as it was originally. Volvo brand fluid can be bought cheaply by the gallon on the internet. Being as the Supertec and the genuine Volvo are both Dextron III in a perfect world and should perform the same, but didn't. I assume some minor differences are present. June
