Transmission drain and fill - funnel size?
Hi all, I'm planning on doing a transmission drain and fill on my 2004 s60 2.5t and want to be able to fit the funnel into the dipstick tube. I want to just get some plastic tubing to attach to a funnel I already have. What size tubing do I get so it fits snuggly into the dipstick? 10mm? Is that outer diameter?

1/2" is the O.D. of the tubing I use. The I.D. read 1/3". I just mic'ed it to be sure.
I set one end of a 14" long piece in boiling water to soften it. Then onto a funnel the softened end goes.
The tubing fits perfectly into the dipstick tube but you still have to pour the new fluid in slowly

In this video the funnel is 9/16" (14mm) outer and 3/8" (9mm) inner. The 9/16" outer is the very max would fit and need to toss the metal clip to slide inside the tube. Warm up the fluid in hot water, will flow much faster. You don't need a hot engine, so won't burn your hands

Is the 15L total, or is that when you're at the final drain and refill point? Just wondering if I would need 15L total or 15L plus another 2 or 3L for a total of 18L for the complete procedure?

Your question needs to be clearer.
Are you performing a pump out or repeated drain and fills?

Repeat drain and fill, using the drain bolt to drain and dipstick to fill.Georgeandkira wrote: ↑23 Nov 2020, 10:11 Your question needs to be clearer.

When I've drained a total of 15L is that the stopping point where I won't have to do anything else but refill it, or is the last drain and fill right before I hit the 15L mark the stopping point?

I'm not sure I know your plan.
Approximately 3.5 quarts of fluid drain out when you unscrew the drain plug.
There's no way the entire contents of the system (10-11 quarts) can drain out.
Look at the fluid. How darkened is it? Is it pure, clear red? If it's pure clean red, you needn't do additional drain & fills.
If it's black and foul, do more.
Drive the car a day or week between drain & fills.
You're diluting the dirt with an inefficient process. However, the fairly reasonable prices we pay for transmission fluids here in the US make up for that inefficiency. Also, many people don't have the mechanical aptitude or experience or confidence to disconnect a cooling hose and perform a pump-out.
By the 3rd drain & fill you'll likely see improved clarity. That'd involve ~12 quarts of fluid.
You have to decide how many times you do this. Each time is 3.5 quarts, not 15 quarts in one shot.
FYI: I performed a pump out on my first V70 and my fluid ran clear red after only 8 quarts. I've needed only drain & fills to keep the fluid clean thereafter.

I didn't mean the entire 15 all at once. I was asking how many times to drain and fill, and what the total amount of fluid would be (15, or more?). When I get around to doing the multiple drain and fills I don't want to have too much fluid left over or not enough to finish filling it up.

How many times you D&F is your call. Multiply the number of D&Fs by 3.5 to get a total.
If you do 4 D&Fs it'll total 14 quarts. (4 x 3.5 = 14)
Remember, there'll be a period of diving to circulate the fluid after each D&F so there'll always be time to fetch additional fluid.
Do you live in far away from civilization?
Why this panic over having to know the exact amount? You CAN'T know because you don't know how dirty your fluid is.
Seriously, if it's that vital to know how much to buy then buy 4 quarts of fluid and do your first D&F.
FYI: You can raise the left front wheel a little higher than the right and get a bit more than the 3.5 quarts to drain. It'll be ~3.75 qt with the left wheel higher.
If the fluid drains clear and red and perfect then buy no more.
Are you allowing yourself only one trip to the store? I can understand wanting to limit shipping costs if ordering online.
Avoid them all and use MaxLife for your first D&F.
Also, have you given any thought to what brand of fluid you'll use? There's a lot of chat over this.
1) Volvo fluid: Expensive. Available from dealers and online
2) Toyota Type-IV: Said to be the same stuff as Toyota used the same transmission, only cheaper. Available at dealerships and online.
3) Mobil 3309: Get a parts shop to order it for you by the 12 qt. case. I bought one from a store to which it had been mistakenly delivered.
4) Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc LV: Very reasonably priced full synthetic product. Available in retail parts shops.
5) Wolf's Head Super Universal Synthetic Transmission Fluid: Very reasonably priced. Available via the amaliestore online.
6) Aisin T-IV fluid: Marketed by the people who built the damn things. Available online.
I've used these 6 with inarguable success.
If your fluid is filthy and neglected I'd suggest the gallons of MaxLife. It's not old fashioned Dex/Merc. Many will screech and howl but I've used gallons of the stuff cleaning up these very transmissions with no ill effects.
After you cut the dirt down you can switch to something dearer if you like.

There aren't any Toyota or Volvo dealers close to me, so I would need to order the fluid online. That's why I was asking how much fluid to get so I don't have too much or too little. I'm also on a fixed income, and I can't afford to waste money by buying more fluid than I need.Georgeandkira wrote: ↑25 Nov 2020, 10:00 Do you live in far away from civilization?

I don't understand why you feel the need to be rude to me. I haven't been rude to anyone, nor have I said anything offensive to anyone.
