S70 repair input

Post by patcal »

Had a post purchase inspection on my 98 S70 GLT at Swedeone Autowerks here in Portland. Overall the car is in awesome shape. He said my heater core is seeping & I need motor mounts. They want $635 for just the heater core job. He said the mounts could wait a bit. After watching the repair videos that seems real steep. Due to health issues, I am limited to what I can do to the car. Are these guys good? Is that price reasonable. Sorry about the long post. Just looking for thoughts.

I say shop around. Check with local Volvo club and Hey Portland area Volvo posters!! Hook this guy up. They may be a great shop and only use blue-box parts for warranty reasons, just like the dealer, but it sounds like they bill at the same rate as a dealer also.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Well, I could not do it. Just don't have the mobility. I have a mobile mechanic that I have used before who is going to do it for $240 labor. I already have the parts. Unless something comes up it will be under $300 total for the job.

There are how-to's on here that you could print out for the mechanic as a guide.

Really good time To change your coolant , every 30,000 miles

They heart core is on the low side of the system so switching to water first stops you form puking coolant into the interior

My coolant is only about 3000 miles on it. Was going to use hose clamps on the heater hoses & a industrial strength trash bag to catch the rest.

+1, let the mobile mechanic breeze through so he knows where to go. These are by far the easiest cores to change on a modern car that I have ever seen. Presented right, the mechanic may appreciate the approach, as he /she will not waste time figuring out where things are. Heck make 'em watch the Robert DIY video, on it (on your dime) I bet It will pay back in the overall job time.
