I sent out an old Hepu pump yesterday USPS. Im not sure where this one came from so don’t run car with it. Stick it in with no gasket for testing purposes. It was made in 1998 so it’s got patina

Great, I'll be ready when it comes. I've got the old water pump out (also a Hepu), that thing sounds like a maraca.

Was able to do this successfully. If I go by the rule that the cam sprocket bolts have to form opposite triangles it means that 'mark 2' from my original picture was the correct one, thus probably skipped around 4 teeth. Here's it now:

I'm guessing not, but would there any point in filling up coolant when doing a compression test?

No reason for coolant. Full charge on battery if possible but you are looking for anything over 80 psi. If valves bent you will have 0 psi

Before you run the starter sure to crank it around 720 degrees by hand and make sure all marks return to in-time.

I think you are going to be ok with four teeth off. Lottery win! (I’ve won it twice)

^^^^^^^

Read this three times and definitely do this check

By hand, no valve damage.

Starter will bend valves.

Well, I was hoping to write a message of a different tone today, but alas. No compression on two out of the five cylinders.

Abscate, your pump came today and I got it installed. Checked the timing belt alignment five or six times doing a 720 degree crank rotation, was lined up every time. Disconnected the ignition coil, the fuel pump fuse, and the fuel pump relay. Full throttle while doing the compression test. Of the two cylinders that had no pressure, there was no normal rhythmic cranking noise, just a steady starter noise.

Any thing I could have missed?

It sadly may be the end of my volvo 850 saga for now. Maybe next summer I will be motivated enough to try an engine swap.

Otherwise, thanks for all the great help here, and happy holidays!

Oh, crap on rye.

Where are you located? Maybe we can help harvest and engine from an accident victim.

I'm in northern MN, but I probably won't be able to undertake it until late next spring at the latest. will be out of state for a while.

So, it would be great if someone has a lead on something, but I won't be able to act on it until then.

Cheers
