850 Sunroof Stuck Open?

Post by swedishsledmafia »

Hi everyone, just made this account but I’ve been an unofficial thread lurker for a while now. Unfortunately, I’ve got an issue that I can’t find a direct solution to. The sunroof on my ‘96 850 GLE sedan (recently bought to replace my 940 wagon for the time being that has a dead in tank fuel pump :( ) got stuck almost all the way open.

It worked just fine before but ever since a few days ago it’s not having it. Not the motor, it still slides fine about a quarter of the way closed when it seems to ‘hit something’ and automatically slide back open. Upon looking at it closer, it seems like whatever mechanism is used to tilt the window open into ‘vent mode’ or whatever you want to call it that is only supposed to happen when the window closed is activating on one side because it is getting dragged along with the sunroof, causing that side to lift and stop sliding. I included a picture of the mechanism on either side, you can see how the one on the stuck side comes all the way out.

Sorry for describing it in an awkward way, I’m way more used to the RWD Voe’s and not the whiteblocks! I’m hoping to find a way to fix this without having to take the whole headliner out. It’s getting cold here in Canada and I’m not about that convertivo life. Thanks a lot!

You can see the tilting mechanism got dragged out. (The almost nail file like looking thing). It moves with the sunroof - when the glass is fully retracted it goes into its proper place, but it doesn’t stay there. Excuse the ghetto cardboard rain cover.

The other side, hard to see but you can see the end of the tilting mechanism staying in the right place.

From your picture it looks like the plastic trim(nail file looking thing) has come loose from it's attached position on one side and may be preventing correct operation of your sunroof. That plastic trim is just that... trim.. and can be removed without impeding the operation of the sunroof. That piece
(nail file looking thing) scissors open and closed with venting position and simply neatens up the appearance of the interior sunroof arms.
