Thanks everybody. The Michelin defender it is, 600 bucks at Discount tire. Like I say I really need a softer ride -- so want to double check that these will provide that. I'll ask for the H rating. Always had Michelins before I bought these Yokohamas last time (never again).

I have had mixed results with Michelin tires since moving to Canada from Europe. Returned 3 sets of Michelin winter tires to Costco. There used to be rumors they sold 2nd quality tires from Michelin. I spoke to one tire manager (a fellow Scot) and he said that was balderdash. He had been to the factory in US and their tires were just the same as other suppliers.

The winter tires I returned were a set of Pilot Alpins, wanted X-Ice but they didn't have them. Terrible tire in wet snow and not great in ice either.
Also returned 2 sets of X-Ice tires with badly cut sipes. Whole sections were missed on one side of the tires and on 2 sets. 3rd set were ok.

Just bought a set of Vreidstien winter tires from a supplier I have used before. They were sold as 'new'. Date code was 2617!! I phoned and complained and there response was 'American Tire Standards say if the tires are stores out of UV light and in temp controlled environment they can sell them as 'new' up to 6 years after manufacture!! Canadian Tire standards recommend getting rid of tires at 7 years of age regardless! Complete BS from supplier. They refused to take tires back so gave them a terrible review and won't buy from them again (company was Quattro Tires).

I have Michelin LTX's on my 4Runner. Loved the tires on our 2001 Suburban. Great all year around even up here. Quiet and long lived.

Neil.
