2004 S60 First cold day of the year, no start issue.

Post by nucci480 »

2004 Volvo S60 FWD. Today was one of the first really cold days here. Went out to start and the car turns over but does not fire. While I was doing the PCV earlier this summer. Noticed a spot on the throttle body that had worn the plastic on the bottom of the ETM. Hoping that replacing the throttle body will fix this issue. I just put a can of seafoam in the fuel and drove it about 120 miles on the highway before it was just parked. Will, a bad Throttle body make the car not start?

Do you have a check engine light? Have you run any scans for codes?

There are many items which could be causing your no start issue, but you have not provided enough information. Codes would be helpful.

Assuming you don't have a scanner try these items:

Look up how to run the built in diagnostic program built into your Volvo - this will tell you if you are having communication issues with any of the covered modules. This may provide some information, but there is a chance it will not. A scanner would be optimal.

Have someone put the key into Pos 2 while you are in the back near the fuel pump - listen for the sound of it turning on. Don't turn the engine over - the pump should turn on and prime.

Unplug your MAF and see if it starts.

Those are a couple items to look at. Also provide a better description of your no start - what sounds and smells are you getting. Report back.

No codes, let the car sit for a day, and the weather warm up. I started with no problem. Pulled the throttle body to replace but got the wrong part. So it will be replaced later on. This is the hole I was talking about.

I’m stumped on how it got that hole. Looks like it was dropped and broke almost.

Perhaps your crankshaft positioning sensor is failing. I believe cold effects them.

What should the ohms read on a multimeter for a crankshaft sensor?

looks like an impact strike, ran over something that got flipped up and hit the plastic.

The hole in the ETA is in the plastic cover that protects the motor solenoid and the throttle plate position sensor. Water and dirt (and mice) are getting in there causing all sorts of nasty damage. Get a replacement installed ASAP. Car is likely to drop into limp mode or engine stop unexpectedly.

I replaced my ETA with a cheap chinese clone with contactless throttle position sensing in early 2019 and it has been fine.

Do you have a link for the replacement you got? Do I need Vida dice or is it plug and play?.
