When you say "do the head" and gasket... I've done head gaskets, but are you saying I need to do a head overhaul too? I figured a thorough disassembly, cleaning and reassembly would be enough for the head.abscate wrote: ↑06 Dec 2020, 07:21 Coolant in oil
Cylinder head and gasket (have to do both)
Oil cooler (rare on RN 1999- engines)
Cracked piston liner
Cracked block
Fooling with the turbo is a waste of time, statistically
At 200k the cylinder head job will run 600-900 in parts
get a copy of VIDA up and running and check the ETM sensors for operation and synch - the electronic throttle body on the 1999 has a 150k MTBF and costs $500 to fix
You need a cam lock tool for the 1999 with variable cam timing but that can be fabbed
I'll do a leak down to see about block and liners. Any tips on identifying a bad oil cooler? Is it the one I've heard is easier to get to? I know it may be rare, but like the turbo I'm entertaining every possibility right now in the early stages, but will start with the coolant pressure and leak down tests since it seems 99.9% likelihood that will yield results.
The last thing I want is to bring it over to my place, get into it, find it's going to be something I didnt want to get into... and then have a car I can't bring back to PO. But I guess the worst that can happen is a $500 car that I can part out for far more... So there's minimal risk I guess.
(other than my wife yelling at me for taking on dead weight.
I just really want her to work out... Everything but the engine, even the underbody is stellar. In Maine, that's a rare find.
