Cylinder head and gasket (have to do both)
Oil cooler (rare on RN 1999- engines)
Cracked piston liner
Cracked block

Fooling with the turbo is a waste of time, statistically

At 200k the cylinder head job will run 600-900 in parts

get a copy of VIDA up and running and check the ETM sensors for operation and synch - the electronic throttle body on the 1999 has a 150k MTBF and costs $500 to fix

You need a cam lock tool for the 1999 with variable cam timing but that can be fabbed
When you say "do the head" and gasket... I've done head gaskets, but are you saying I need to do a head overhaul too? I figured a thorough disassembly, cleaning and reassembly would be enough for the head.

I'll do a leak down to see about block and liners. Any tips on identifying a bad oil cooler? Is it the one I've heard is easier to get to? I know it may be rare, but like the turbo I'm entertaining every possibility right now in the early stages, but will start with the coolant pressure and leak down tests since it seems 99.9% likelihood that will yield results.

The last thing I want is to bring it over to my place, get into it, find it's going to be something I didnt want to get into... and then have a car I can't bring back to PO. But I guess the worst that can happen is a $500 car that I can part out for far more... So there's minimal risk I guess.

(other than my wife yelling at me for taking on dead weight. :D )

I just really want her to work out... Everything but the engine, even the underbody is stellar. In Maine, that's a rare find.

Is this the case? If you do know how that might occur, I would greatly appreciate a description of how it might happen before tuesday so I can check for signs when I pull that turbo... I'm decent at diagnosis, but I want to be sure I don't miss anything.
From Ozark Lee (https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forum ... 4&start=10):

"In order for oil and coolant to mix in the turbo there would need to be an actual crack in the in the turbo housing. The two systems are isolated by the casting itself and not by seals or O rings. It is not a common problem but it can happen."
Awesome. Thanks!

You won't hear the turbo at all. I can't on mine, even with my head hanging out the window, but with a boost gauge, it's hitting 6psi.

At 200k if the head comes off it would be foolish not to do new valve stem seals, valve lapping, and plane it flat. Not a big machine shop bill but a $200 machine shop bill plus $150 in parts

andromedus, take a look at abscate's recent threads, you will either be emboldened, or run away! Lazarus auto repair would be a good moniker for MVS NY!
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

If you think coolant is mixing with oil in the turbo, change oil and bypass the water feed to the turbo. There are applications where they only use oil to cool it. I can't remember where but I think I saw a tech sheet indicating it as well...

Scratch that, looks like it might be undersized for the application...
