98 xc Engine Tranny removal help

Post by CIK7 »

I don't have engine hoist. If I totally unbolt and unhook the engine/tranny from each other, should I be able to freely lift the engine out of the bay? I'm removing the cam cover and head first. Also is the power steering pump, alternator, and AC compressor compatible with 1996 Volvo 960?

By freely I mean, is there not something that goes from engine to tranny inside after I unbolt and unhook that will prevent me from lifting the engine away from the tranny?

I have removed all accessories and accessory bracket. I will be removing the oil pan, cam cover and head. The block with pistons and crankshaft shouldn't be too much weight should it?

Accessories are all compatible

I’ve got a block without a head on it and I’ll swag it at about 350 pounds. That’s a big dead lift.

You need to separate the eng8ne and torque converter or pinion gear to lift them separately, not just unbolt them

They need a good 6 inches of separation

Moral of the story is, buy or rent a hoist.

What is the pinion gear? I googled that but didn't get results.
Would I be able to separate them inside the engine bay?
I've seen Robert Spinner (rspi) unscrew a subframe bolt to lower one side of the engine. Perhaps I could get a 2nd hydraulic jack to support 2 sides of the engine, then start loosening each subframe bolt, then gradually lower the jack. I also just now thought about the fact that the front wheels and all suspension needs to come off if I'm going to do that.
I suppose I could do that, or I could get the dash and wheel assembly removed first comfortably instead feeling like the earth's gonna flip like it did before LOL

You can’t separate them in the bay until they are dropped. The frame members get in the way. On a stick, the pinion inserts into the clutch plate so you have to pull it back something like 6-8 inches

On an auto, you have to pull the torque converter clear off the engine bell housing..maybe 4-6 inches?

This is a cry for a $150 Christmas present if a HarborFreight engine crane. You can also make money with this pulling stumps for people once you release them from the roots.

If you try pulling them without cutting you end up bending the rail and have to weld in a new piece before you return it the guy you borrowed it from in NJ called Bruno. This happened to a very good friend of mine.

You can remove the subframe and drop the combo onto the ground but thats a ridiculous amount of work compared to a hoist , especially if you break a subframe bolt.

I absolutely can not afford an engine hoist. And my family would not consider spending $150 on me. I think I'll try the subframe drop. I'm not sweating a broken sub bolt. If that happens, well it's going in the scrap pile anyway. Two hydraulic jacks with a car jack should be enough support I think. Should the front of the car be light enough after dropping the sub, engine, exhaust, and tank to lift it up over the engine?

I still used my hoist to lift the front of the car up high enough to get the whole lot under the car.

Without a head/etc, you'll need less room.

Seeing as you're cutting thing apart, just cut out the bit of sheetmetal between the frame horns, and drag it out the front.
