940 AW70/71 Transmission overhaul.

Post by zimbodel »

Anyone here did a transmission overhaul themselves on AW70/71 ?

I want to know what it entails as I learned it has a ball-bearing valve system, and that is always a nightmare.
You have to know how to disassemble it so the balls dont fall out.

Turn it upside down and take the valve body off. As I recall, there is only one ball, if that, when valve body is removed. If you take valve body apart there are several. It is an easy transmission to repair but you will need to draw at least one piston down with a press of some sort. Once the valve body is off the gearbox is wide open. The valve body is complete unit so the case is mostly open when it is removed. The gearbox has a center support that has two bolts holding it in once you get the first group of cluthces and brakes out when pump is removed.

That is good news thanks.
Do you know of any videos for sale that has detail AW70/71/72 rebuild instructions or paper documentation.
Really difficult to find any documentation.

I just bought a warranted transmission from a large transmission seller and they screwed me over. The shop that installed it for me said it was DOA. No response from them regarding warranty. Crooks all. They just ignore my warranty claim. I read from Scotty Kilmer, That US Data on transmissions states that more than 30 percent of transmission you buy remanufactured are DOA or break within a year.

There is unfortunately no other option than to DIY looking at the Stats.

I worked on trucks and cars since I was young and is no beginner, but I never attempted transmission work. I always passed on that.

That you say that it is easy to fix the AW7X transmissions is hopefully also easy enough for me.

If you maybe have or know about AW7X overhaul documentation or videos for sale it will help a lot.
Thanks.

I poked around youtube.

If this is what it takes with a 71L in similar fashion , I am in deep water.

I have two transmissions here I can try to replace. I just tested them by hand and they seem to work except for reverse I cannot check.
That is a 10% test I know, but at least I know that park works and that the shifter works.
The warrantee'd one that Reman Co, sold me was a dud and dint work when installed and DOA and it failed a basic hand test.

Just a reality check,
Since I need to replace the seals and likely for good measure also the rear bushing for good measure, what is your advice on trying these used transmissions.
I was thinking, only replacing the front seal at the torque converter as the rear seal and bushing can arguably easily be replaced when on a lift.
That way I dont have to replace bushings and find the transmission doesnt work anyway.

It makes sense to me to only replace front seal and test the transmission and then do the rear seal and the bushing when on the car if the transmission works fine.
What is your advice ?
