Replacement Ignition Key

Is there any cost effective way to get a replacement key for a P2? I only have the one key and the rubber has deteriorated and is very soft and coming apart. I would like to have 2 keys but don't want to spent hundreds of dollars. Below is a picture showing the condition.

The most cost-effective way is to have a new blank cut, then securely affix the one in your picture to the inside of the steering column. That way all you need is a mechanical key, no need for programming.

That sounds like a great idea, Thanks! I wonder if I can carve out the electronic bits or is there a chip or something molded inside that gnarly rubber key handle or should I just glue the whole thing in there?

There are three types of keys, first years had this rubber one, then plastic with fob/blade non flippable, last years flippable key fob. I've seen the transponders in all these. In the rubber key I would never try removing it. In the two late ones, it's very fragile inside a thin glass cylinder glued to the fob, very risky to try removing it.
