2001 V70 radiator cooling fan will not shut off

Post by azureblue »

and at a very bad time. At least I got a jump start and made it home. After getting the car home and shutting the car off, I disconnected the fan at the connector above the radiator that carried power to the fan, and, of course, the fan stops. So what is causing the fan to run all the time? I thought it may have been the climate control, so I pulled fuse 24 (third row in fourth fuse down 10A) in the side fuse block, then reconnected the fan, but the fan still ran. I have to solve this tonight.....

BTW, I'm pretty sure this is Ok, but I would like to check - I want to put the car on an 8 amp charger to get the battery back up enough to start the car. (key is out of the car) Is it Ok to do this under the hood at the fuse block?

Very bad timing on this break down... Anything I can do tonight?

I am close to a parts yard. What is the year range I can pull from to replace the fan control module? I gather I have to replace the entire unit on the 2001 - fan, shroud and module?

You can charge at the fuse block on the rear battery cars.

A low battery can cause a lot of havoc so charge it then see if the. Fan problem returns

Thanks for the charging device. I didn't want to disconnect the battery to charge the car.
As it turned out it was the fan controller that was the problem. I got the whole assembly and dropped it in, and the battery recovered enough in 18 hours to start the car. Glad I went in there - I found a few other things that needed fixing or righted. The PO was a sloppy mechanic - The crossover pipe's clamps were loose.

ImageIf your fan won't shut off the possibility would be the module built into the fan. This happened to my 99 S80 last month. Went to the local pick N pull and found a good fan for $16.00. Pretty easy fix....

As I wrote on annother thread here... You are right. It is the controller that is toast. No use to hazzle with trying to find electrical wiring broblems.
Go to the junkyard and get yourself a new fan assembly.
