2005 s60 Tail lights

Post by 537playing »

Warning message that I have a bulb position failure. It seems my right rear light aren’t working. All bulbs are good. Tested fuses in engine compartment, side of driver door and left rear panel inside trunk.
What am I missing?

I don't know if the S60 is the same as a v70, which is what I have for a wiring diagram but if similar there's one CEM relay that controls both rear parking light sides so this is okay since your left side rear lights work.
There is a separate fuse for each side and a separate shunt for each side but I would first suspect the socket(s) on the right side if the bulbs are known good. The V70 has two rear parking lights so if the S60 is the same then check both sockets carefully and measure if voltage is at the sockets when lights are on if you have a meter. With lights off and if you have a meter you can also measure continuity from the sockets to ground. There is a shunt in series with the lights but I'd suspect this last although it can also be pulled out easily and checked for continuity and the conditions of the contacts. You could also swap shunts around to check if problem moves but I don't think this part fails very often, it's just a very low resistance resistor.

The fuse for right side rear parking lights is up front, left side of front dash for the V70, 11C/31. Shunt for right side rear lights is RSH5, REM in trunk, see photo.

Is is just the rear parking lights? If two bulbs are both out? Brake and reverse lights okay on the right side?

Also, position lights have small bulbs with very fragile tungsten - the tungsten may still work but may be cracked and cause intermittent voltage drop (and message). It's so fragile, it may break just by putting down the bulb on a hard surface, so handle with care

Thanks for this info. I had a 2001 S80 in which I had to replace a shunt so this is very familiar. To clarify all the lights on the rear right were out-brakes, reverse hazards, etc.
My S60 doesn't have the setup in your picture but it also doesn't have any shunts that I could find as well.
But this becomes even more strange.
When I went this afternoon to match up your picture to my car, I started the car and the lights all worked! No error message on the readout.
Why does it fail but then resets itself to work again?
What electric gremlin is leeching in my car? Any insights?

Sorry, you have a later designed REM. If all the rear lights are out on the right side then I would suspect a bad ground. There should be a ground junction near-by where multiple black ground wires are group together and bolted to the body. That's where I would check first, possibly a loose or corroded grounding point.
