Tackling p80 Awd fuel pump

Post by Jaugh »

So my pump quit on me, of course I just filled up.

I’m desperately trying to figure out how to get the 19 or so gallons out with little luck. I’ve tried siphoning, but the filler neck seems much too curvy to be possible. I’ve looked at trying to do the fuel filter but don’t know how I’d get the gas out from there (connect the line to a pump/siphon?) or would it drain on its own? I’m also looking at trying to disconnect the filler tube near the tank but it seems fairly difficult due to the space and their pretty seized together, I’d worry wiggling it too much would leave me with a broken filler neck.

Can anyone PLEASE give me some insight. The manual says to drain via the filler neck and that’s all. Doesn’t seem possible?
Thanks,
Jack

Undo the fuel line at the rail and jump the fuel pump relay under the fuse box. You will need about an hour to pump out a full tank

Wouldn’t that not work since my pump isn’t working?
I can crank it for 10 sec and get a tiny squirt from the Schrader valve on the rail

The problem is that you have no pump available as you stated. Volvo also made it difficult to get a hose down the fuel filler pipe to try to prevent siphoning by bandits. The pipe is not too bad to get to the tank. However, as it is a saddle tank you may only be able to empty the passenger side of the tank as it needs pressure to push the gas from the LHS to the RHS.

It may need a 2 prong attack. First a small diameter flexible hose (maybe 1/2" ID) and try to push that down into the RHS of the tank and get one of those cheap hand pumps to try to pull the fuel out of that side.

Then step 2 may be to remove the downstream side of the fuel filter, connect it to a bucket with a pipe and try to pressurize the tank to see if it will transfer the other half of the tank into the RHS and out the filter into the bucket. You could do this actually for both sides. The caution here is to keep the pressure to a reasonable level not to damage anything, as most of the fuel hoses are NLA. The fuel pressure is 43 psi approx at the rail, so that should not be exceeded.

I cannot think of any other way to extract the fuel as the pipes all run upwards from the tank.

Maybe Jimmy57 can give a suggestion on this?

Thanks, if I empty the one side wouldn’t it not matter to empty the other then? I’m only messing with the pass (right) side of the tank. Thinking I’ll take another go at siphoning then for now.

Well if you are just replacing the pump and are planning to do the floor cut access in the rear footwell then that is ok. If you are planning to drop the rear sub-frame and tank assembly then that may not be enough.

If you can get a pump hooked onto the fuel rail you should still be able to siphon the tank near dry on the pump side. That said, it's going to be a long process...
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

I was thinking about that, but couldn’t figure out how to go about it. Was wondering if a cheap inline pump would hook up somehow.
