XC90 Parking Brake Adjustment nightmare!

Post by craigndee »

Hi guys. Trying to adjust this parking brake. 08 Volvo XC90. This is a total pita! I've seen write ups, bad videos, etc and just cannot figure out how to tighten this thing up. Clip out, turned clockwise until it stopped, replaced clip (dropped it once, was lucky with a magnet.). So confused. As others have been I see. Does the forward facing piston need to be physically forced back into the larger cylinder, or forced out more? it looks like its out pretty good. I read people said it needs to come out towards front of car to tighten system? Seen videoa of two wrenchs etc?? I just cannot figure this out and started throwing tools after several hours of the uncomfortable yoga. Not good. So confused. Need to finish inspection and replaced parking brake pads and expanders. .I have tried everything I could find on this topic and just cannot figure it out. Help is appreciated! Thanks, Craig

Loosen the barrel until the cable is loose and the stub is pulled back in. Tighten the barrel back up and put the clip in place (the teeth ratchet out while tightened down). remember to push the pedal down 3 or 4 clicks (to allow for slack after the tightening is completed).

Once the barrel is reset, use whatever you can (i was able to use a pair of pliers and a open box wrench to pry the stub out of the barrel. Do that until you cant anymore. Press the pedal down to test wheel lock. release to test brake relief.
here is a video that helped me to understand how it works.

Well guys... I have a one that is manufactured 2002 and sold as a 2003. The front parking cable from pedal to the point where an anchor holds the left and right wheel cables and has an adjuster under the console. Many has pointed out where it is... so I dont.
This cable was upgraded later on. Unfortunately they do look EXACTLY the same. With a little stub pointing out to the front.
This one can not be pulled out as mentioned in many "how to do it". Whatever tool you use even VOLVO´s own heavy duty one can not move it.
And it is not supposed either. As mentioned... the later cable looks 100% identical and can be adjusted as many writes.
You hold the front or housing still with a plier... and the turn the rear part counter clockwise to turn out visible threads. The more threads the wire
will be shorter since it´s shroud/cover will be longer. The more threads the longer shroud the shorter wire. There is NO clip on these early cables.
While on you´re knees doing this... try to push the brake pedal with you´re hand to confirm it´s slowly geting harder to push. Don´t bother to put carpet panel back. It´s time for a road test to se how it works. Bring you´re tools with you and make a stop or two to do some more turnings on the adjuster. The car should stand still in both up and downhill. + you dont want to stiffen up the brake to much to destroy the parking pads. Listen to NEW noice from the rear... you dont want anything of that
My early cable is made by Bosch. I will in time have it changed and submit the partnummer of this oldie that does not has a part that comes out with clicks.

Im just adding some more on this parkingbrake nightmare.
As mentioned... my XC90 is manufactured 2002 and sold as a 2003.
Parking brake did not pass inspection, so I did jack up the car and started to dissasembly part after part.
No problem with caliper and caliper bracket and thye disck itself.
The lower brake shoe was loose. The part in the dustshield that holds the spring was gone completely.
Now to some Youtube stuff about this parking brake "how to fix"
First the bolthead to the ABS bracket broke off. Second one of the bolthead to the dustshield itself broke off.
I dont dare trying to hazzle with any more bolts. I have to manufacture some new fasteners for the brake shoes
and weld them on.
Wonder why no one have done a repair kit for this hazzle. It´s just no use to try to dissambly all this parts for
just getting new springholders for the shoes...
and guess what... the spring that sits on the caliper on my car... it is hard soldered to the caliper.
No the hole that the spring is parked in is not filled with dust. The spring is soldered tight.
I know my business. Beeing a former Volvo employer and also responsible technician for airbrakes on Jumbojet Airplanes.
I have to make some own small brackets that will hold the shoes in place and welding them in on rusty dustshields.
