I broke one of the fins off of the ring tonight when I used a rubber mallet and screwdriver to try that method to break it free. I think I'll hose it down with silicone spray to lubricate it.

The issue is more one of all the other tubing (EVAP system??) that's sitting in the way as far as pulling it up and out.

I figured the hose fittings were spring loaded sort of like on the fuel filters of other cars I've worked on.

I'll just try to take it easy and not break anything. For now, the car 'runs'

I hosed out the IAC with contact cleaner as well as the MAF. I also cleaned the throttlebody. The car is running a bit smoother just due to those two things. I cannot believe how much crap is pulled into the throttlebody via the PCV system. It still cuts out.

However, I got to thinking that the fuel pump is probably not totally to blame. The car only cuts out when you put down the pedal to accellerate. After a bit of time, the car regains power. It has power at high RPM.

I'm still stuck on the MAF/ O2 sensor / TPS sending bad data to the computer, but I don't know... I pulled the A2 engine codes and after a year of not resetting it, I got a 1 - 1 - 1 (sadly!)

I really need an oil catch can inline with my PCV system. When I did the PCV replacement last year, my throttlebody was clean and dry!

Now look at it:

The butterfly was completely coated in crap and my MAF had backmist of oil on it

Sadly, I still have enough blowby that I get steam out of the dipstick. This is why I think it can't hurt to seafoam the car and see if things clean out any better.

Well, I think I just solved 90% of the problem.

The replacement fuel pump from the salvage yard has my car running more powerfully than it ever has in the time I've owned it. When I am on the gas pedal hard, there is no burned gunpowder smell. From a stoplight, the jump it makes when I hit the gas is amazing. It used to always hesitate, even when I thought it was running well.

Check out my smirk as I weaved through traffic in town and was in the process of passing a cop 20mph above the posted limit ;)

Good job Luke! Love the smirk. Still, be careful for cops...they still will pull you over, despite driving the Volvo!
