ABS code reading

Post by 98S70T5 »

Guys, I just picked up a Zurich ZR11 reader because of good reviews and live data (Harbor freight special). It states in its manual it is compatible with all Volvo ABS systems that are OBDII.

Per the manual, if the car is flat out non compatible with the abs system on the vehicle it will state that on the screen. This just will not connect and suggests calling tech support. I wanted to be reasonably sure the ABS issue was related to the control module before ordering a reman unit. I have tested all of the wheel speed sensors prior and all appear to be good.

Anyone had issues connecting to a failed ABS module?

Thanks in advance

I have at moment one guy problems to be honest connecting to ABS but he can connect live data to it. So need tweak slightly. I did recently read one these era Volvo's ABS uses left front sensor for speed info. But not sure how yours handheld reader do it.

I found this: https://manuals.harborfreight.com/manua ... /63807.pdf

To be honest it looks like standard OBDII emission test level tool. Or sometimes i call basic or generic OBDII tool. I am suspicious about the tool by what i saw by reading the manual that it really can do it as it sounded very rounded up by not declaring exact models of Volvos. As these era Volvos has usually only one or two ECUs onboard (so ..limited) which communicates with this standard OBDII level stuff.

So.. yes and no.

can we go back a step here. what is the issue you are having or trying to diagnose?

It is possible to not be able to read the ABS. The connector to the ABS can be flakey. Does the reader give any info?

Odds are it can only read 'basic' ABS faults that are handled over the OBDII interface, but not the detailed ones you'd get from something like VIDA.

It has 421 reviews and no Volvo in any of them

My guess it is $25 capable reader at the $125 price point

Do you have more info on the App and Bluetooth connector you are using? I was considering that but couldn't find much info on which, if any would read ABS codes.

I had my suspicions that it wouldn't do what it said but they agreed and made notes they would return with no restocking fee if the scanner didn't work.

Thanks for the input.

1996 & 1997 850 Motronic 4.4 cars are fully OBDII except ECC.
1997-2000 are fully OBDII including ECC.
These cars have modules for everything...Engine,auto tramsmission,abs,instrument cluster,power seats,immobiliser,ecc,srs.
So....plenty of modules to communicate with...with proper Volvo scan tool.
Vol-Fcr for '96 & '97 850...'97 and '98 s,v,c,xc70....and Vida for '99 and '00.

Earlier 850 cars from '92-'95 are OBDI for EU market.
Some '95 for U.S market have both....OBDI under the hood and OBDII data link in the cabin.

Yeah, on our '97's, I can get ABS codes with the 850 OBDII app.

I'm just using an ELM-327 BT adapter that pairs with my Android phone(s) (Have used it on the past 3 phones I've had). I just bought it off of Amazon 5 years ago or so.

Hell, the app even gives trouble codes for the electric seat controls (there are issues with the one in the wife's '97 GLT)
'97 854 T5 - Manual Swap/M4.4/COP/NA cams/P2R Brakes/16T/ chassis bracing/ XC70 nose swap
'97 855 GLT - Hers. RN swap/16T/COP/VVT/exhaust/302s/Flashed M4.4/ chassis bracing/ 2 kid seats
'78 GLE - Waiting in the wings. Future whiteblock/T5 swap.

The Others- '83 TBird turbo, '85 Mercury Marquis LTS (1 of 134), '86 LTD Wagon, '81 Granada GL, '76 Beetle, '93 F-150 I6

Thanks Chuck! Great info. I really wanted a dongle like that so I can swap into my truck and monitor oil and transmission temps on the fly while towing.

The app is called 850 OBDII?
