Help

Post by 1phatG »

I have a 740 wagon 1990. Have trouble with it just stalling out while driving. I pull over and it will start allmost right back up. Does this at pretty random times. When I am sitting in trafic it some times does it also. You can feel it start to happen when you are sitting still. What can this be.

quite a few things..
-bad fuel pressure regulator (usually has other symptoms though, like notable hesitation on acceleration)
-air mass meter could be off, but that normally has bad performance implications
idle motor could be closing up for some reason, which is somewhat likely.
-arbitary electrical problem.. i would hope it's not this cause it'll be kinda difficult to pinpoint if it's something that happens randomly

Next time this happens, please check the tachometer when the engine is stalling (but still rotating). If the tach is showing 0 rpm, you have no ignition, but if it is still showing some realistic rpm, it is something else. (Just something to start with)

This problem has happened at least once in all three of our cars ('88 760 Turbo Wagon--'88 760T Sedan -- & '87 740 Sedan).

In the 3 three vehicles we discovered that it was more common than previously thought. A faulty Injection Control Relay was the culprit. The '87 740GLE has a single BLACK Relay can be seen mounted on the frame that holds the coolant reservoir under the hood. The 760TURBO models have a pair mounted on the right side, just above the general area of the ABS controller.

It is cheap to replace - About US$30. Give it a try, post results.
