So I pulled the plenum with the intention of checking for "lawnmower syndrome." I had simply forgotten to attach one ground wire for the coil packs. Thing started so fast it was almost frightening. Runs well. (First time ever doing HG or timing belt on any of my Volvos. Not as daunting as I had feared, I must say)
But I have a coolant leak at the rear of the engine. Probably the o-ring on that silly steel tube that runs along the block. Also...still puffing some white smoke. Definitely coolant. I'm hoping it is just residual left in the exhaust system after the original gasket failure.

Had similar problem with back water tube on passenger side of my 04 - C70, that fitting was not tight after Head R&R. Found that rear leak using a harbor freight Inspection Camera to see back there. Also found a second leak at t-stat that was un-find-able. Finally used a low and slow pressure tester to find the small illusive t-stat hose leak. Problem was I had coolant going to the back of engine because it was on jack stands. Kept looking in the back. yet leak was in front and hidden. Hard to find leaks with running car hot and noisy. That's why I like pressure tester on a cold car.

I replaced the entire t-stat housing on this repair but I am very suspicious of that plastic "T" on the lower radiator hose. The belly pan really makes it hard to find out where the coolant is actually coming from. Hopefully finding the last of the leaks today and I'll be able to start it and let it run long enough to burn off the residual coolant
