Will a 2002 V70 X/C left rear door fit a 2001 V70 T5?

Post by bbeels »

Hello All,
This week I visited a pick and pull yard that had been closed due to the pandemic, but has reopened the DIY area. I was looking for s mall part and hadn't really thought of the bigger picture, till I got there and saw that the vehicle I was getting an interior floor handle from, was the same color as my car. My drivers side rear door has a clear coat issue that I've been expecting to try to fix myself, with spray on clear coat and lots of smooth sanding, but it occurred to me that I could swap doors and not have the hassle of making sure the painting process worked.
Anyway, I took pictures and it kept gnawing at me. My car is a 2001 V70 T5 and the donor car is a 2002 V70 X/C.
I think that the doors will swap without a challenge, but now that I called and got a quote on it, I thought it would be a good idea to check with other Volvo owners to be sure.
It looks to like I'll have to trade my exterior trim on to the new door.
I'd like to go get the door this weekend, and really don't want to buy a door that won't fit!

Thanks for everything,
Brian

It will fit and it’s an easy two person removal/ install, a bit trickier with one person. More bulk than weight is the issue. You need a E Torx for the lock screws and a tiny Torx to release the wiring plug, if it’s similar to P80

Good to know about the E torx, didn't know they existed. Mine hinge bolt looks like this, but I really didn't notice what the donor car has. It might not be a bad idea to pick up an E torx set before I go to the yard, just in case.

Well, I feel silly.
I didn't even notice the 2 12mm bolts on the door side of the hinge.
I did watch a video of how to remove the door, and it showed removing the T-47's on the hinges, so that was my focus.
I expect that the E torx bolts are used on some models and the 12MM on others.
I'll make sure that I have an assortment of tools with me just in case the donor car has the E torx.
BTW, would there be any advantage to taking the hinge from the donor car, my hinges have been working just fine all the time I've had it.
Thanks

My thoughts: If you can get it loose, get the hinge also. You are not likely to pay any more and you will have spare hinges.

I hope there are no extra holes.
I did look at a digram and there seem to be just four holes low on the door.
Now that I have it home and can look, the upper edge on the x/c trim seems to be glued on to the door. Oops. The door structure does seem to be the same and the paint is good, so if I can get the glue off without messing it up, great. If not, I do still have the original door and can still try to do the clear coat repair. I'd at least be able to do it at leisure with the door off and not have to fight weather. I did get the hinges with the door, so that's nice. Oddly, the donor car used 12 mm bolts for the hinge area top and bottom.
