Didn't volvo and/or other cars have a badge on the grill saying "Lambda sensor" or something like that?

Yep.

Funny, when I was a new young dad and bought the used 240T wagon, Odvar the genius Volvo mechanic said the "Lambda Sensor" needed to be replaced. With my then current experience with newer cars, that was some mysterious dark science Volvo wizardry. Of course you should change it, right away!

It's an oxygen sensor. I've learned a lot since those days!

Lambda Sonde was the first closed loop engine management of mixture based on oxygen content of the exhaust, at least in 'consumer' cars.
