ABS light and the Trac light are lit

Post by matthew1 »

[This thread is a breakaway from another, non-related thread.]

TomPaol:
I am trying to find out why the ABS light and the Trac light are lit. I have just had all new brakes put on. Is this just a short somewhere? Where do I start looking?
Ozark Lee:
There is a 99% chance that you ABS problem is the ABS module itself. All of the post '95 modules fail at some point.

You can either get the module rebuilt by Victor Rocha, Module Masters, or the eBay guys. If you are decent with a soldering iron you can fix it yourself for free.

PS - I am not a moderator here or anywhere else but you might just want to post a new thread the next time you have a problem unless it is a real current thread that you are jumping in on.

I agree that 99% of the time it's the module but if you just changed parts close to the wheel sensors, it would be worth checking those sensors. If you have a ''93-'95 850 you can check the specific ABS codes under the dash by way of the diagnostic box.

OK thank you. This is a 1997. I would like to attempt this repair myself. But is there some diagnostic tool I should have that will pin point the problem? Or is trial and error for diyer?

On a 1997 the only way to read fault codes is with a Volvo Scan Tool or its equivalent.

A dealer can read fault codes for sure but I have no idea what they would charge. A good independent shop would likely read them for less money.
