Thanks. I realize this is one of the potential problems, so I'm trying to find the Yard option. It wasn't clear to me from your first message how to access the sensor, though, in case I want to replace it myself. Would you mind elaborating, for a very non-technician guy? Thanks!

The sensor is on the outside of the brake booster in the engine compartment. It's to the left of the master cylinder when viewing from the front of the car. It has a ring clip that holds it in place and to remove it you press on the open end of ring with a small screwdriver blade to expand it past a single retaining notch. You don't need to remove the clip just expand it enough to pull out the sensor. You can also use two screwdrivers, one to expand the ring clip and one to get under the gap to hold it open and pry it out more if needed, see photo.
The sensor does have an o-ring on it that may stay in the brake booster or come out with the sensor, just keep track of it and make sure one (and only one) o-ring is installed. I say only one because the replacement may have an o-ring on it and the old ring may still be in the booster. To install you just insert in back into the booster and the ring snaps back into the notch.
