2001 V70 2.5T Brake Failure / Strange Idle

Post by philrogo »

Hi.
Driving along today, and the brakes decided not to work. Had to press with both feet to slow the car down. Very hard to press pedal. Just missed slamming into the leading car. In addition, the engine began running roughly, (almost like it was missing). Further, when I pulled over, and put it in neutral, I noticed a rough idle, and the tach would sometimes jump around between 1000 to 2000 rpm, and back down again. There are no messages on the Info screen, and the Service light is not on.
Wondering if this sounds like an ETM issue, that may be covered under the extended warranty/recall. Any guidance or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks;
Phil

The brakes doing what they did is strange (you need to get them checked immediately) but the surging and rough idling certainly does sound like the ETM. Get your codes read and see what they say.

Brake booster failure or you have air or water in the line (or a line leak). Get those checked ASAP, the car isn't safe to drive like that.

Hi.
Thanks for the replies. It turned out to ba a vacuum leak at a three-way hose junction. A plastic piece unglued and unsnapped. A little crazy glue solved the problem. Could have been thousands in accident damages or injuries for a $2.00 fix.

I know it's holding now, but I would be tempted to coat the junction with epoxy to make sure it doesn't come apart again.
