I haven’t tried it myself, but I have heard of the idea. It should be pretty effective for a quick check.

I've never done a smoke test or hired somebody to do one, but I think finding leaks like this is what they're for:

It seems odd to me that something would heat up and close up that fast, but possible if a loose flange or something.

My '94 does have an EGR valve.

I'm with dubya, if you can feel around the pipe (safely, brake on, wheels chocked) when it's very cold on start-up, you might find a jet blowing out. Or the smoke test at a local shop.

Thanks both!

Yes, odd for sure. I only noticed it after I replaced the motor mounts, meaning I deducted that something had too much flex in it for too long with the engine moving up and down by up to 2 inches! Which is why I suspected that flex joint in the down pipe...

Pretty sure the EGR valves stopped by 96, either way, I can't see one in my car.

Will take some time to trouble shoot this, and will report back! Might have to borrow 4 jacks to lift it before I start it up so that I can be underneath it. Thanks for the smoke machine link. Some really creative diy ones on youtube!

People often confuse air injection (SAS) with EGR as it connects to the exhaust.

No EGR after 1995
