Replace the check engine light bulb -- '92 740 Turbo Wagon

Two years ago, I had to replace a couple of filters; air fuel filter and mass air filter (if I remember their names correctly) in order to get my check engine light to go out and pass my SMOG. Luckily I found a Volvo used parts outfit near me and the cost of the filters were affordable and my mechanic replaced the filters, using the used ones I bought and the check engine light went out and I passed SMOG. This year, everything passed on my SMOG test, except the visual -- the check engine bulb apparently is burned out. I am so disappointed that one little bulb prevented me from passing the SMOG check -- at least that's what we think it is. Can I easily remove the screws to remove the glass & then the dash to get to the bulb so I can replace it?

I have a '92 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon with 250,525 miles, I am a female, but I try to do a little research and from time to time, have fixed problems myself (light a leaking fuel line, a window that had slipped off the track and once did an oil change myself, just so I knew I could do it). I remember when the odometer went out, they had to pull the dash in order to fix it and I believe that part of the labor was expensive -- also, when I had the air conditioner serviced, they had to get in under the dash, and that was the time consuming part of the job.

If you think I shouldn't try this myself, how much do you think it would cost and would I have to go to my SVS (Volvo mechanic) and pay the high labor rates?[/b]

Disconnect the battery negative cable. If the radio is coded make sure you have this.

Remove two cover panels and screws holding the instrument panel.
Lift out the instrument panel.
Disconnect the connectors and remove the panel to where you can work on it.
Twist the relevant bulb holder to remove the bulb.

Replacing is reverse of the above.

Thank you so much - I'm glad tomorrow is Sunday - I'll try it then.

I had made an apt. at SVS in Sacramento & they already said it would be at least an hour labor--which is a minimum of $60. I'd love to be able to do this myself and save that money & then go back and complete my SMOG test. I will let you know if I was able to do this and it solved the problem.
