96' 850 evaporator job, can't remove heater box, please help.

Post by 850 LPT »

Hi guys, I am in a major pickle and need your help.

I am doing the evaporator job in the 850, and I am at the point of removing the heater box from the car, but I'm not able to.

This 850 has manual heater controls and therefore cables going to the dash panel. The cable from the right side knob is routed in such a way that they go under the major harness that crosses over from the right side to the left and has a split going to the center console. The cable from the left side know are going under the driver airbag cable, but it looks like I can undo that. So that should not be a problem.

I could disconnect all the plugs in the center console harness and remove that, except for that weird little box behind the shifter. It says on there: DO NOT REMOVE. What's up with that?

Here is a photo showing how the cable from the right side knob is going under the harness:

Then this one shows the box I can't disconnect:

I can't seem to be able to disconnect the cables of the dash panel either, so what do I do?

Thanks so much as always,

Dirk

Airbag control module. Disconnect battery leads, wait 10-15 minutes, unplug and remove this module. Keep it carefully, install back in last.
If my English is bad, please correct me

I would disconnect the cables at the controller head. A metal clip and then you work the cable of the eye of the control arm carefully.

Looked at this but decided not to mess with that. Spring Steel sleeves snapped into thin plastic. Presumably a recipe for disaster.

I’ve done three without breakages. It’s high quality stuff. Needle nose pliers and take tension of the spring steel away from the plastic

Thank you Azik. This worked and I was able to remove the center console harness:

Be careful with the white manual box. That one has some delicate parts and is also NLA, and HTF in junkyards

New problem though. I have everything disconnected from the heater box, but it won't come out.
There seems to be something still connected right in the center between the left set of screws:
DSC_0194.jpg
It feels like I would have to yank really hard, or something would break.
Anybody know what to do here?

Thanks, Dirk

I have a completely disassembled 850 and S70 in my yard. Tomorrow I'll look on it, maybe there are some fastenings left. It's 11pm now in my town.

It sits in a hard plastic pin that extends into the dash. I took pictures wAy back in 2013 when I did mine

I think you have to lift as you draw back to unhook the pin
