How did you do your transmission?

Post by cleven »

Got a 2001 v70 FWD, I am gonna be doing the transmission on next week. I was wondering how have some of you went about it? Iv seen readings on some taking the motor and trans out from up top, and iv seen readings on taking it from the bottom while supporting the engine and dropping the sub frame. How have some of you done it? FYI ill be having access to a lift.

Search the posts for engine removal. You should find lots of comments. I have not pulled these engines, but the choice of top or bottom, looks to me to be determined by your equipment access. A lift would suggest out the bottom, but I think you would still need a way to lower the engine down.

I take tranny and engine as one and lift it out the top. Had I had a lift I would have done it like Ed China and dropped it down on a rolling tool cart or something.

I just removed/reinstalled the transmission on my 2005 XC70. That involved removing the wheels and axles, installing support bars over the engine bay, removing the subframe, lower the whole assembly, and removing the transmission through the left wheel well.

I’ve done both the lift and the drop.

The lift is much easier

I have an engine support to hold and lower the engine. Looks pretty straight forward. Only difference from these and other cars i have done are the torque converter bolts

Yeah I think I just made it harder than it actually is in my head to be honest. Iv dropped subframes before now that i get a good look at it its not much to it.

Very jealous of your lift access.
