They are heavier and the insurance rate was lower. The insurance reduction nearly paid for the additional shingle cost. The issue we have here is hailstorms. After a heavy snow, we get ice dams. The snow melts at the roof, refreezes, which creates a blockage for water , usually at the edge of the roof. It then backs up under the shingles and into the house
Not a problem for an event, but if it happens every year, the wood will rot. The grace shield stops the water from coming in
The alternative is to roof rake your snow off , which amuses me because most only rake the edge.
Duh.
