You are coming up on 30 months of ownership at $4500 in cap cost plus repairs, or 150 per month.

That’s really good. To calibrate, if you are driving 12k per year ( not withstanding Covid) that’s an almost all in cost of 15 cpm plus another 10 for gas and oil - half of the Federal rate of 55 cents

You are driving a $60,000 luxury car on a $8000 cost, and you could probably get most all of it back if you chose,
MVS Readers,

I wanted to quote this comment from ABSCATE. (From November of last year)

He is 100% correct I could sell my S80 and it wouldn't have been a terribly expensive purchase.

And every time that I drive the S80 it does feel like a very expensive car.

But why would I sell, if anything breaks I will post here on MVS to find the repair solution.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement to meet the $10K goal

Especially to ABSCATE

Take Care

Paul

Now for the important part

It is amazing what a little wash and wax can do

MVS Readers,

Because of the COVID lockdown my S80 has a lot fewer miles than it likely would have if thing were more normal.

Projection 1,000 miles per month

Actual for 30 months 15,000 / 30 = 500 miles per month

So only half the projected miles.

Whether it is your cost of ownership or average yearly mileage, or both, your S80 is on the higher end of price range. For someone with good credit could take it away from you for $83-93 per month, while buyers keeps the cash.

MVS Readers,

I decided to Bypass the Sirius Satellite module on my LR2 (a first cousin to the S80)

What I did should work on any P3 vehicle

I did this because the Satellite Radio module may not shutdown properly and this will lead to an unexpected flat battery.

I don't use my Satellite Radio module so I just bypassed it

This link shows what I did

https://www.freel2.com/forum/post407047.html#407047

If I do this on my S80 I will post those pictures here

Take care

Paul

MVS Readers,

Oil consumption and MPG info for my 2008 3.2

I drove my LR2 recently about 1000 miles and I checked the Oil level before and after.

The 3.2 in my 2008 LR2 is the same motor used by Volvo in a 2008 S80, V70, XC70, XC90 with the 3.2

Note: my 2010 S80 3.2 is slightly different in that it has Oil control rings that are smaller to make a small improvement to fuel economy but the design is still fundamentally similar.

For my 2008 3.2 driving a 1000 miles the oil was at the max line before I left and it is still at the max line. Visually I think I can detect about 1/20th of a quart or 1.6 ounces. Which is how much oil it would take to fill a shot glass. This engine has only used synthetic motor oil since new and I never add oil between changes. Currently I use Mobil 1 0W40 and I change it every 6 months or 7,500 miles.

For the 2010 S80 I am also running the same oil and I expect it should give the same result.

The people that I met up during the trip have a newer XC90 in an amazing blue color. I let them know that my Land Rover has a Volvo engine. They had no idea. But they did like the idea of a 6 cylinder in place of their Turbo 4 cylinder.

One last thought I did a MPG experiment for the LR2

26.9 MPG with the cruise control set to 63 MPH and driving in the truck lane (on the way there) Note: trucks are limited to 55 MPH

23 MPG driving in the left lane at about 80 MPH (on the way back)

This Engine has moved my LR 126,000 miles

The EPA rated MPG is 23 MPG

The important take away for anyone with a 3.2 that wants better gas mileage is that you have to keep the RPMs at or below 2,000.

Take care

Paul

PS is you are interested in 3.2 fuel economy I posted more information on the LR board https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic35826.html

All those people who leased or bought new cars in 2019....all that money spent on depreciation or rent, when you didn’t need a car.

Meanwhile , our almost flat depreciation on our cars means we lost almost nothing.

That is quite a mileage penalty for the jump from 63-80 mph, which just gets you into the traffic jam at the 405/5 Y sooner

Abscate,

I agree the fuel efficiency change is dramatic. Based on the testing that I did it appears that the change is more related to the engine than it is related to the power needed to maintain the speed. This is because the 3.2 with its variable valve lift is like having two engines in one. With the low lift intake valve the engine is very efficient and with the high lift the engine makes a lot more power.

Low lift 3.6 mm (about 80 Horsepower available)

High lift 10.0 mm
(240 horsepower available)

To get the best fuel economy the 3.2 needs to be in the low lift mode with camshaft adjusted to open early.

I do wonder if the transmission had 8 speeds instead of 6 would the engine be able to stay in the low power mode up to higher speeds.

If the Solenoids that activates the high lift mode is broken then the engine max power will drop from about 240 horsepower to about 80 horsepower (my estimate). Operating in this mode would give better fuel economy but terrible performance. I recently helped someone with this problem on a XC90 3.2 and the owner complained that it wouldn't climb a steep hill.

I should buy a solenoid to keep on my shelf and add it to the list of common failures.

More engine info: https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic34007.html

Thanks

Paul

PS welcome to California, we always speed to rush into the traffic jam

PPS I am really glad that I didn't buy a new car in 2019
