2.3T.. 2.4T.. 2.5T.. why?
2.3T.. 2.4T.. 2.5T.. why?
A question for the moderators..I was just wondering why Volvo did that? What could..1 displacement make any difference? Does anyone else find this weird?

It's a good question and I don't know the answer. Speculation: a 2.3 -> 2.5 is an 8% increase. HP won't necessarily rise on this linear scale, but with the clear home run that the Volvo 5 cylinder was, I can see them trying to squeeze more torque from her with very little additional effort.

That said, the P2 R cars' sleeves are cracking under heavy boost and today's high miles.
Tuners want the 2.3 HPT block because of thicker cylinder walls. Everything comes with a cost, and in this case the thinner 2.5 walls proved to be that cost.

Evinrude made 9.9 HP outboards to avoid the regulations that were set at the 10hp baseline.
Same with 49CC motorbikes , they avoid registration which begins at 50CC.
It might be something similar.

In Italy it’s 2.0 cutoff. So Volvo made a 2.0 5-cyl version also
I remember reading of some other markets getting the 2.0, but can’t remember which.

All good points above. Overall it's perhaps mostly a matter of improving the design and gaining extra torque at lower revs. Volvo started the big turbo T5 with a 2.3 then lowered the bore to 2.4. This helped provide max torque at lower revs. As for the smaller turbo, it started with a 2.4 and went to 2.5 which had a good increase in max torque (235 vs 210) again from lower revs. As for the european 2.0T it's called marketing and perhaps better mpg. I am guessing the 2.0 was a different block as well: They also got the T5 and the R in Europe, and also had the infamous D5 which very unfortunately was not offered in the States or Canada https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_S60
