I hope you all can help me. I have a 2005 xc90 202,xxx mi and this past weekend while out of town I lost everything on my left combo switch- directional, high beam, and cruise control on the steering wheel. Right side is fine including radio controls. Check fuses in the interior fuse box near the steering wheel and all checked out. I did some research and some that had similar issues disconnected the battery for a while, which I did with no change. My first through is that the combo switch died but when I realized the cruise was gone as well I eliminated that. I have heard of a steering module possibly.
Any help is appreciated!

Thanks CN. Well it looks like its the SAS with I assume is integrated with the SCM from other posts I have read. I no longer have radio controls and my wipers only work on one speed, with no wind shield spray and no rain sensing mode.
There is a 2004 xc 90 at the pull a part down the road from me that just came in on Friday. If I simply pull the SAS and install in my car, is there programming involved? I don't have a VITA (but I should). I can replace the ingnition switch at the same time.

The SWM ( Steering Wheel Module ) is common to all the listed things.

I was able to find a donar vehicle- 2005 XC90 with DSTC at my local pull apart. In my research I understood that there were three SWM flavors available. With DSTC, w/o DSTC and a European variation. The part I removed was an exact match for my vehicle. After the R&R there was not change, except for the fact that in addition to no steering wheel controls, now I have an anti-skid message. I did follow the centering instructions to a "T". I find it hard to believe that this SWM has the same issue as the previous which leads me to believe that either 1- its the wrong SWM and there are even more variants, or two, my problem lies elsewhere. I don't have access to a VIDA so I am flying a little blind. Any input?
My best advice would be to buy a DICE. Then get vida. 2014d is free from the right places. And is plenty new enough to get you on the right path. Get an El cheapo eBay dice for a Benjamin and restart your troubleshooting there.

Thank you. I know DICE is the gold standard but I did some research on the Icarsoft V200 for Volvo. I had one for a Range Rover I owned previously and it was a great tool. Anyone have an experience with this particular iCarsoft model?

I could be wrong but I think you may be looking at an issue with the lever hub AKA the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) as was noted earlier. It's the active module the steering angle sensor (SAS) contact reel and stalks mount onto. Only one PN I can see for a 5 cylinder (DSTC), 31318973. There are 4 other PNs for this module that I can find in VIDA but this one should be your replacement.
For validating DSTC or not with the pre-07 models, there's a button marked DSTC on the lower switch row in front of your shifter, should be on the far left. If the 03-06 donor vehicle has DSTC it should work. As a side note, the -8973 PN is the same fitment for the 2.5l single turbo 5 cylinder or the 2.9l twin turbo 6 cylinder (AKA T6).
Rick Hale Parker above is correct, based on the combination of left plus the cruise switch, it would intuitively seem to be the SWM as the common fault area and as others have noted, getting the vehicle read for error codes is warranted for the failure and will get you a little closer to what the vehicle thinks is the issue. I don't know the iCarsoft line, if it'll read Volvo specific codes (like ECM-930x) you should be fine.
I'm waaay okay if someone wants to challenge and/or correct my assumption(s) with some logic as I'm just guessing but SWM ought to be a good place to begin your troubleshooting. Hopefully putting the old SAS back in will resolve your antiskid (you're doing all this with battery disconnected, right ?)
Good luck with your repair.

Stop flying blind.
VIDA/DiCE would be a better choice then iCarsoft because you can access more information and do more, like read software versions, do calibrations ... ect.

Thank you. I have an iCarsoft V200 on order because in the short term getting a a VIDA DICE up and running in the short term is problematical on a number of fronts- financial and logistical. It will read Volvo specific codes, recalibrate the SAS, etc. The donor vehicle was missing the climate control and radio, so I could not visually confirm DTSC, but it was a perfect fit and I assume '05 and forward XC90's had it anyway. The donor SWM was a no go but I do have access to an '06 S80 at the same pull apart that I am hoping no one has taken that part.
So I got to thinking...in the few days leading up to the failure, I noticed my radio would change stations on its own. Since the failure, its been fine. Could a faulty radio steering control disable the SWM? The other concern of course is a CEM failure. Once I get reader I should hopefully get more answers.
