Check your Banjo PCV bolt

This is the Banjo from my 2002 2.5ltr XC70 (part number i think is 8653884) it has a very small diameter hole that i can pass wire though. There is no ball bearing/slug or anything that can come loose and destroy your engine. It has 01-02 stamped on the head. I believe Volvo fitted defective bolts to 2004-05 vehicles

Here is a picture of a failed Banjo bolt, third bolt in the pic where the pin has dislodged and ruined the engine. This is the part number 31325709 for the 2014 improved version.

If you have the version without a check valve there is a risk of blowing oil seals/gaskets under turbo boost.

To find the resource to investigate this do I just look in the main PCV replacement instructions? Or is there a guide for this particular part (don't have a need to do full PCV service atm)

I've replaced the banjo bolt with the latest design and it's supposed to have 2014 stamped on the head of the bolt. Today I attempted to see if I could view the head of the bolt with it installed in the manifold (my car). I used a small inspection mirror and a bright shop light but I couldn't make out the 2014 marking on the head of the bolt and I don't recall if the bolt had the 2014 marking. The space is very tight between the bolt head and alternator. This would be the only way I know of to verify if you have the latest bolt design when it's already installed.

yes it should have 2014, you might need to remove the steering pump to even view it with a mirror.

I don't remember seeing a banjo bolt when I redid my PCV system with all new parts. Is this only on particular models? I have a 2001 S60 non-turbo. If it's on all of them could you post a pic of where the bango bolt is located so I can check mine?

It lives under the intake manifold on the right, passenger side. You might not have it on an NA in 2001.

It looks like yours vents to a small hose without it.

The only bolts on mine were to hold the PCV box onto the block, and all of the hoses attached with new Oetiker clamps that I bought; I'm not a huge fan of worn clamps. My power steering line was leaking at the reservoir, and where it attaches to the pump, so I cut the bad ends off and installed Oetiker clamps. I haven't had a single drop leak since. (Sorry for going off topic.)

I wanted to follow up here as well regarding the banjo bolt. Mine was the old style when I did my PCV job last summer. I cleaned it out with carb cleaner and didn’t think twice until I saw what it could potentially do if the pin and ball came out. I was already getting prepared to replace my alternator pulley so I ordered the new style. Mine came with a 2020 stamp on it, so don’t get caught up thinking it has to have a 2014. It was easy to access with my alternator dismounted and moved to the side. Here are a couple pics.

Off topic edit. Screw those oetiker “bust your knuckles break something else” clamps. Lol On things that I will be going in again for routine maintenance I replace them with regular ones as long as the pig tails won’t rub on something else. I will put them back on things that I probably won’t touch for a while or are necessary like CV boots.

Did check the banjo bolt on our V70 today, pcv was serviced by the dealer with previous owner.
Used a mirror, a bright light and my phone to make a picture of the mirror, so that I could zoom in.
Luckily it is the later style marked with 2014.
